Time For EuropeΉμουν Μάρτυρας της Γερμανικής Κατοχής στην ΕλλάδαΘριάμβευσε επί των Ιταλών, πάλεψε στα ίσα τους Γερμανούς, υπέκυψε εντέλει στο μοιραίο: Στις 27 Απριλίου 1941 τα πρώτα στρατιωτικά τμήματα της Βέρμαχτ εισέρχονταν στη συνθηκολογημένη Αθήνα χωρίς σχεδόν καθόλου θεατές και «χειροκροτητές», για να ακολουθήσουν λίγο αργότερα τα ιταλικά στρατεύματα. Από την ημέρα εκείνη μέχρι την αποχώρηση και του τελευταίου Γερμανού στρατιώτη στις 12 Οκτωβρίου 1944, η Αθήνα και όλη η Ελλάδα θα βιώσει μια τετραετία πρωτοφανών κακουχιών και στερήσεων.
H Ελλάδα υπήρξε μια από τις ελάχιστες χώρες της Ευρώπης που αντιπαρατέθηκαν τόσο πεισματικά στον κατακτητή, γράφοντας έτσι μερικές από τις πιο πικρές και, ταυτόχρονα, πιο ένδοξες σελίδες αντίστασης. Βεβαίως, η καθημερινότητα των περισσότερων Ελλήνων πολιτών, κάθε άλλο παρά ηρωϊκή φάνταζε εν μέσω μιας εκτροχιασμένης εντελώς οικονομικής και κοινωνικής ζωής. Η εξασφάλιση ενός στοιχειώδους γεύματος παραδείγματος χάριν, ειδικά για τους μη έχοντες σταθερή εργασία, ήταν μια ολόκληρη περιπέτεια που απαιτούσε ώρες ή και μέρες αναζήτησης κι ακόμα περισσότερη τύχη, αν δεν γινόταν διανομή συσσιτίου κάπου κοντά.
Τα στρατεύματα κατοχής από την πρώτη στιγμή κατάσχουν και λεηλατούν προϊόντα και αγαθά για τις δικές τους ανάγκες. Η ραγδαία αύξηση των τιμών και ο υπερπληθωρισμός οφείλονταν τόσο στις ελλείψεις των βασικών ειδών όσο και στην αύξηση κυκλοφορίας του χρήματος που οδήγησε σε απανωτές υποτιμήσεις. Στις αρχές του 1944 κυκλοφόρησαν χαρτονομίσματα των 50 και 100.000 δρχ. και τον Οκτώβριο της ίδιας χρονιάς των 500 εκ. και των 2 δισ. αντίστοιχα. Ο συνδυασμός προκλητικής κυνικότητας και αρπακτικότητας των κατακτητών, που ιδιοποιούνταν την όποια παραγωγή είχε απομείνει, της διάλυσης του κρατικού, οικονομικού και κοινωνικού ιστού, μαζί με τον Βρετανικό ναυτικό αποκλεισμό συντέλεσαν να ζήσει η Ελλάδα έναν από τους χειρότερους λιμούς σε ευρωπαϊκό έδαφος, ακόμα και για τα δεδομένα του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Άραγε, πώς συνεχίζεται η ζωή μετά την Γερμανική Κατοχή; Δύνανται οι αναμνήσεις να εξαφανιστούν τόσο εύκολα;
