「完全的愛」(O Perfect Love)是由英國女詩人葛妮(Dorothy Bloomfield Gurney)所作，1883年時，葛妮的姐姐即將嫁為人妻，葛妮與姊姊跟朋友在家中齊聚歡唱聖詩，剛唱完姊姊最愛的「奮力堅守」(O Strength and Stay)，有朋友為此嘆息，因為姊姊最愛的奮力堅守，其歌詞不適合用於婚禮。姊姊也為此感嘆，妹妹是這麼棒的詩人，卻沒有寫出好的婚禮詩頌。 葛妮一聽，拿起聖詩集便跟在座朋友與姊姊要求離開片刻，他說只要片刻的安靜，也許能完成一首婚禮聖詩。果不其然，葛妮離開的十五分鐘內，借用「奮力堅守」的曲調完成了膾炙人口的「完全的愛」事後葛妮告訴大家，他之所以可以這麼快速完成，全仰賴神棒助她完成。 而這首歌膾炙人口的程度，連1889年，英王喬治五世的妹妹威爾斯公主結婚時，都使用這首歌，而我們現在經常聽到的版本，是1889年威爾施公主結婚前，皇室委託知名音樂家班比(Joseph Barnby)所改譜，爾後這首歌即被編入聖詩集，從此流傳萬世。

愛的真諦(Theme of Love)是由簡銘耀所作，他出生於台北，幼年時跟著父親牧會而四處搬家、轉學。爾後簡銘耀畢業於淡江中學，並就讀台灣神學院音樂系，主修鋼琴、副修作曲。年輕時就對電子鍵盤特別有興趣，喜歡即興創作，但認為作品不成熟，所以沒有保留記錄下來。
1972年，他當時仍在神學院求學階段，一天早晨細雨綿綿，他坐在禮堂鋼琴前，看著窗外孫雅各(James Ira Dickson)院長的雕像，心中竄起對前輩思念的情懷，當下他決定依著這股情懷，創作了他第一首曲目「思祖」。不久後他入伍服役，退役後開始寫聖詩創作，但創作過程認為自己在創作聖詩上沒有天分，於是取材聖經或荒漠甘泉，而愛的真諦就是簡銘耀引用歌林多前書13:4-8的經文，所創作的第一首聖詩。
