Nystrom創作這首詩歌時，大約25、26歲左右。當時他在美國華盛頓州西雅圖的一所學校，擔任中學教師。暑假期間，他前往德州參加萬國歸主學院(Christ for All Nations Institution)為期六週的暑期進修班。起初參加的目的，是因為喜歡的一個女孩子，報名參加這個暑期聖經課程，Martin J. Nystrom為了能夠有機會更進一步地認識對方，所以也跟著報名參加。 參加課程期間，一位室友鼓勵Martin J. Nystrom加入禁食禱告的操練。禁食幾天後，他注意到他對世俗的慾望和肉體的情慾開始減弱。禁食十九天後，他在男生宿舍的一架鋼琴前坐下。鋼琴上方有一本已經被翻開的聖經。聖經內頁正是《詩篇》第42篇。起初，Martin J.
