The Third Sunday of Advent -- December 15 2024
As we continue to prepare for Christmas during this Advent season, we may want to take a minute to think about, what is it that we are preparing for? The coming of Jesus, of course, and our Salvation. What exactly does that mean? What is it that God is promising to give us? We’ll hear about that and more in today’s Scripture and Commentary for the 3rd Sunday in Advent. David's Mighty Men
We are now in to the third season of this podcast, and as I have done at the beginning of each other season, today I will be talking about how I came up with the title of Bob’s Beanfield. If you’ve heard it before, you can feel free to skip this episode, but you might just want to listen again. Like so many stories, you may just hear something different this time, something you need to hear at this moment of your life.

The Second Sunday of Advent -- December 8 2024
When we talk about Advent and Lent, we think of these two liturgical seasons as penitential. That’s why we have the priests wearing purple, why our churches are decorated in a more subdued tone. Yet, they are both seasons of waiting and anticipating. We all could use a little more of the childlike anticipation of Christmas that children have. In today’s readings, we get a sense of that anticipation from John the Baptist, and we hear about glory. Let’s listen to the Scripture and commentary! Scripture readings are from the Lectionary for Mass for Use in...

The First Sunday of Advent -- December 1 2024
Today we begin Advent, our celebration of anticipation of the coming of Christ at Christmas. Dr. Kreeft points out to us that there are three times Christ has or will come….the first, 2000 years ago in Bethlehem, the third will be at the end of time, and the second is to us in the here and now. How do we anticipate all three of them? We talked a bit about the end times over the last few weeks of the past liturgical year, and are reminded of them again today. Let’s listen carefully with our hearts to see what...

Happy New Year!!! Today, we begin a new Liturgical Year, and with it we begin with a new cycle of readings for Sundays and Holy Days. To kick off the New Year, we’ll listen to the introduction to Dr. Kreeft’s book, “Food for the Soul”, Reflections on the Mass Readings for Cycle C . If you’re a long time listener, you may find that this year’s introduction is the same or very similar to last year’s so feel free to skip ahead if this is redundant for you. The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe -- November 24 2024
Today is the last day of the Liturgical Year, and this is the last episode of this season of Bob’s Beanfield. Next week, we’ll begin a new cycle of readings, cycle C, which uses primarily readings from Luke. This past year, cycle B, has been mostly the Gospel of Mark. It is fitting that we close the year with this feast, where we acknowledge Jesus Christ as the King of the Universe. Have we truly accepted that fact? Do we live that way? Let’s consider this as we hear the readings and commentary. Note...

It’s hard to believe that this is the last Sunday in Ordinary Time for this year! Next week is the feast of Christ the King, then in two weeks, it is the first week of Advent! Where does the time go? I’m sure many of you wonder the same thing, and especially as we get older, time does seem to go faster. Sooner or later, time will run out. The idea of eternity is hard to understand. We live in time, so we tend to think of it as an unending progression of the days we now live. The Bible tells us that God lives outside of time, that all things are present to Him at once. How do we see that? Right now, in this life, are we blind to that reality? Can we ask God for our sight, to be able to see that? Let’s hear about these topics in our readings and commentary for today! Note that Scripture readings are from the Le...

Our faith and our Scripture are full of paradoxes. How can Jesus be both fully human and fully divine? How do we satisfy justice yet still show mercy? How can the last be first and the first be last? It takes a lot to understand these, and even the apostles didn’t get it right at first. Yet we see so much symbolism in the stories of Jesus that it is impossible to deny the paradoxes are true. Today’s readings show great contrasts. We first hear of the suffering servant in Isaiah, then in the Gospel we hear Peter’s proclamation of Jesus as the Messiah. Wisdom and Joy are the subjects of our readings today. Who doesn’t want those? So how do we obtain wisdom, and from where do we get our joy? Of course, for Christians, the answer is from Jesus Christ himself. And He gives us Himself in the Eucharist, so we hear more of the Bread of Life discourse in John’s Gospel today. Today is the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. We celebrate something that we probably take a bit for granted, the daily miracle of the Eucharist. How we can consume God Himself is incomprehensible, and yet we believe it to be true. At least most of us do. I know many Catholics say they don’t believe in the Real Presence, but it is an article of our faith that the bread and wine become the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus, who is God. Creation can be described as God bringing order out of chaos. A symbol of chaos in the Old Testament was the Sea, or the Waters. Out of the waters, God calls land and life and humanity. Similarly, the chaos of anarchy can be made orderly by rules. Yet in today’s world, we often hear about how rules are not really absolute. This week we hear again about something that very few of us in this day and age have ever witnessed, namely leprosy. It shows up both in the first reading and in the Gospel. And of course, we typically realize that it is in Scripture for us primarily as an allegory, a symbol of sin. So on this final Sunday of Ordinary Time before Lent, it seems particularly appropriate to reflect on how sin impacts us, and what Jesus does about it. We’ll hear more about some of the differences in Catholic and Protestant teachings about sin also. ...

The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time -- February 4 2024
One of the age old questions man has faced for time immemorial is, why do bad things happen to good people? Many of those who profess to be atheists even use that as an argument against the existence of God…how could a good God allow such terrible things? The answers are not simple, nor are they what we would necessarily expect. Along with these questions, we have to also ask what God does about these things? We’ll hear some thoughts about those deep questions in today’s readings and commentary. Note that Scripture readings are from t...

The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time -- January 28 2024
We all face temptation in life. Sometimes temptation becomes more of an obsession, and in extreme cases, we believe that it can even lead us to be possessed by evil, by the devil himself. The good news, though, is that the Word of God, who is a person, can stop evil, whether simple temptation, or full blown possession. How does God send us His word? In so many ways…in Mass, in Eucharist, in Scripture, in those around us, in nature. We sometimes need to just be quiet and listen for the voice of God to hear His word, in...

We know that the Bible is true, because it is the Word of God, and God does not lie. What do we do when we come across a seeming contradiction? How do we know when the stories or words are literal, and when are they allegorical? There are several different senses in which we read the Sacred Scriptures, and how do we know when to think one way or the other? We’ll hear about that today, and also a bit about why we hear the word “Immediately” so very often in the Gospel of Mark, which some have called...

The 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time -- January 14 2024
We are back in Ordinary Time now. Today’s first reading is one of my favorites. It talks about Samuel hearing the voice of God and not recognizing it. To myself, I wonder how often I may have missed hearing God trying to tell me something, and Him saying to Himself, I have to keep calling Bob 3 and 4 times; maybe I’ll just hit him upside the head with a 2 by 4! OK, so maybe God doesn’t think like that, but I certainly feel like sometimes that’s how dense I can be. Part of reading Scripture is learning to hear...

This episode includes the readings and commentary for the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. While not a Holy Day of Obligation, it is a good way to end the Christmas Season and begin that time of the year we call “ordinary”, meaning numbered, not plain. It is the beginning of the Ministry of Jesus, and from here we begin to learn about His life and His mission. This is a good time for us to also think about our life and our mission, which began for us at our baptism. Note that Scripture readings are from...

What is it that we seek? What are we looking for? How do we know when we find it? These questions are things we might want to think deeply on. Today we celebrate the Holy Family. Over and over again, history shows us that as the family goes, so goes society. We may be feeling like families in our world are struggling right now, and we’d be correct. How can we correct this trend? By following the example of the most perfect family ever, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In light of confusion over the recent Papal statements, and especially because this Sunday is about family, I include here and in the show Bishop Barron’s comments: On Monday, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the...

Why do I call this Bob's Bean Field? It has to do with a story from the Old Testament, where a man defended a bean field and as a result, became one of King David's three mighty men. More details will be shared about this story in the first full episode, coming soon! This podcast will also discuss the Scripture readings from Sunday and Holy Day Mass, along with commentary. Leave me a note and let me know what you think and any suggestions! Click here for more info: BobsBeanfield
