Saratogans Turn Up Against "Camping Ban"
On July 1, many Saratogans turned up to oppose a so-called "camping ban" ordinance that would criminalize a wide range of actions and situations of homelessness. The proposal was put forth by Councilmember Coll on the eve of the Saratoga racetrack opening for the season, and residents were alarmed that he broadcast photographs taken of sleeping people without consent. There was one arrest, and people spoke for over four hours, on their own experiences being unhoused, how this would exacerbate the existing housing crisis, and lawsuits that this would open the city to. The council passed it by a 3-2 vote.

“Have YOU heard?”
DON'T CELEBRATE THIS NEW YEARS HANGOVER HOLIDAY!

Before that, different cultures celebrated the New Year on various dates. Can you imagine ringing in the New Year at different times of the year? And speaking of New Year’s, here’s a fun one: 80% of people who make New Year’s resolutions break them by February. But hey, don’t let that discourage you! Let’s make 2...

Have YOU heard this exciting news? December 31 NATIONAL CHAMPAGNE DAY!
Have YOU heard? On December 31, the first New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square happened in 1907? That’s right! Over 100 years ago, people gathered to see the first glittering ball descend, and it became the iconic event we all watch every year. It’s amazing to think how much tradition and excitement have built up around that simple moment! The tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates back to Babylon about 4,000 years ago. People promised to return borrowed items and pay off debts, all in the hope of starting the year wit...

December 30 is The ULTIMATE BACON DAY CELEBRATION!
Have YOU heard? December 30th was the first recorded New Year's Eve celebration in Babylon over 4,000 years ago! People rang in the new year long before fireworks or fancy parties. It was a religious festival dedicated to the gods. So, when you celebrate tonight, remember you're following a tradition that's thousands of years old! The world’s longest hiccuping spree lasted for 68 years! A man named Charles Osborne started hiccuping in 1922 and didn’t stop until 1990. That’s a lot of hiccups! Talk about persistence! December 30th, is Nat...

A Conversation with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis ahead of the Washington Summit
Upon taking office as foreign minister of Lithuania in December 2020, Gabrielius Landsbergis quickly made a name for himself as one of Europe’s most effective diplomats. Early in his term, he announced that Lithuania would no longer participate in the Cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (China-CEEC) format; Estonia and Latvia withdrew the following year. Moreover, since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Landsbergis has outspokenly defended Ukrainian sovereignty and denounced Russia’s occupation. In fact, his clarity on the threat Russia poses goes back years. As he put it in June 2024, “I’m Lithuanian, and we strongl...

Collateral Order Doctrine Meets Church Autonomy Doctrine and Takings Meets State Sovereign Immunity
Mark and Kian return to discuss two of the Seventh Circuit's March 2024 opinions. In Garrick v. Moody Bible Institute, a split 2-1 panel (Judge St. Eve writing and joined by Judge Hamilton, with Judge Brennan dissenting) refused to exercise appellate jurisdiction over a district court order rejecting a motion to dismiss that was based on the church autonomy doctrine. Because they do not end the proceedings, decisions denying motions to dismiss are interlocutory and thus generally not immediately appealable. Under the collateral order doctrine, however, federal appellate courts will hear an appeal from an interlocutory order where...
