Biting All The Apples
If you're going to be so strict, you could at least tell us where to find stoning stones: Deuteronomy
If you take your victorian feminism with a heavy dose of sassy brilliance, this is the episode for you. The laws in the previous Old Testament books were so good, they created a dupe chapter called Deuteronomy. It is full of rules and evidence of a cranky god. We discuss the exasperated, yet fiery wit of Elizabeth Cady Stanton's criticisms. She takes on tithing, commandments, laws, parenting, and more. You won't believe it wasn't written on a Substack yesterday. Here's more info on some of the topics we discuss:The Pentateuch - what is...

A bible, you say? Hear us out.
It's our intro episode! The one where we tell you why you should be jazzed about revisiting Elizabeth Cady Stanton's The Woman's Bible with us. Even if you aren't particularly religious, your life is still impacted by the morality and hierarchy dictated in the Bible. 130 years ago, Stanton and some of her scholarly friends took a look at how the gentleman who translated the bible may have taken a few liberties. Join us - Sara Kaye and Joanna, two reunited childhood friends who are curious about all the fuss - as we break down, admire, and yeah, ok...

EP 95: Feminism pt 4: Suffrage & Birth Control
“Truth is the only safe ground to stand upon.” ~Elizabeth Cady Stanton As women in America were extended more and more opportunities for higher education, there arose a group of educated, middle class women who felt strongly about the need for women's suffrage. She dedicated her life to raising her 7 children, and putting in whatever work was necessary to see suffrage for women realized. She, and other key figures like Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul played important roles in this fight. In the meant...

167 - Early Feminism Was Worse Than You Think - Carrie Gress
Catholic critics of feminism often start with the assumption that the "first wave" of feminism, led by 19th-century figures such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was basically a good thing and compatible with Catholic teachings; only later in the 1960s and 70s, according to this narrative, was the movement "hijacked" by "radical feminists". The only problem is that when one actually looks closely at feminism in its early form, whether that of Stanton and Anthony or even earlier with Mary Wollstonecraft, one finds obvious continuities with so-called "radical feminism". On the level...

Forward Out of Darkness: How Caroline Sparks initiated a journey of Adelaide Johnson's Suffragist Statue from the darkness of the Crypt and into the light of the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol
In 1978, Caroline Sparks stumbled upon Adelaide Johnson's suffragist statue known as The Portrait Monument to Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
