為什麼美國這麼仇母（也許仇女）？美國社會的性別觀念，跟我們認知的先進國家世界第一強國有著落差，受到基督新教文化影響，女性的地位在心理上就是低於男性的。畢竟夏娃就是造成人類墮落的主因，如果只是單純兩性分化，應該沒有高低之分而只是不同而已，而非男尊女卑。但是在父權社會，正常的守本分的女性本來就是處在男性地位之下的。
在美國的性別架構存在一種弔詭的情況，對於兩性來說，性別的曖昧都是人格不成熟的情況，而女性應該要有的樣子又更接近兒童狀態：女性不能像男人那樣主動、有權力意志，所以正常的女性等於不成長的男性。想學男人的陽具型女人只會是半個男性，而全面女性化的女性就接近兒童狀態。這樣說起來女性根本就處於一個永遠比男性更低落的位置。在文化符號上，男性等於理性主動主宰環境的象徵，女性就是意志薄弱、非理性，權力意志不正當扭曲的象徵（滿大人太監式）。所以性別的分化就有了高低之分，這就是基督新教文化下造成的偏見。
在這部分，孫隆基老師大量的引述心理學的觀點，談到很多的性別問題，放到今天看，有些學派的說法顯得過時，但那也說明，性別意識的改變，是逐漸發展的過程。

1940年代哥倫比亞大學的當代文化研究計畫是研究各國民族性的重要計畫，該計畫文化與人格說為基礎，也就是將文化當成是一個放大的人格，也認為人格是一個具體而微的文化。
以現今觀點看來其方法與結果仍有許多的爭議，但該計畫留下許多紀錄成為相關的社會科學研究的養分。此計畫是美國針對中國人性格研究最大規模的一次，研究結論指出中國文化是陰盛陽衰的，所以中國男性其是是不男不女的第三性！？這樣的大眾思想與文化脈絡是怎麼呈現再相關的作品呢？讓我們繼續聽下去．．．
