Kiama Council welcomes more women, including 22-year-old visionary
ABC ILLAWARRA BREAKFAST PROGRAMME: Kiama Council has been historically male-dominated...Until now, there were eight men and just one woman sitting on local government. Of course, the issue of a lack of diversity is not just of concern to Kiama, but councils all across the state. This year, there was a strong push for women, particularly those that are young, to put their hat in the ring. The encouragement seems to have worked, seeing as returning Greens councillor, Kathy Price is no longer the only female sitting on council, and will be joined by three other women. One of the...

Afghanistan's best schoolgirl musicians are touring Australia
Afghanistan has a long musical history that has survived turmoil and war, but it's one that was almost destroyed during the Taliban's rule. It was especially difficult for female musicians, given the extremists banned most types of activities for women. But now music is again flourishing within Afghanistan, and some of its best artists are women. An orchestra featuring the country's best schoolgirl musicians has been touring Australia.

Older migrant women feel forgotten amid their tough job search
While the pandemic's also carving into economies elsewhere, the Prime Minister has told us the economic comeback here is on. But try finding a job if you're an older woman, and particularly, an older migrant woman. Community advocates say the difficulties those women face in trying to find and keep work are being overlooked. And they argue measures like the Federal government's Jobmaker program, targeting younger workers, add a layer of disadvantage for older migrant women. Broadcast: Thursday 10 December 2020 Reporter: Fatima Olumee Presenter: Linda Mottram FEATURED: Cecilia Musengayire – older CALD woman Alison Pennington – Senior Economist at the Australia Institute's Centre for...

Education program keeping students with ADHD in the classrooms
For many Australian kids, fitting into the rigid academic mould of traditional high schools is a major struggle. A student-centred program popular among those with intellectual disabilities is challenging the traditional model of education. Picture smaller class sizes, one-on-one attention, and no exams or uniforms. But there are concerns that this new way of learning isn't readily available across all schools nationally.
