Lex Phonographica 10: Herbert A. Simon, Rationality in Psychology and Economics (1986)
In 1986, the American economist, political scientist and cognitive psychologist Herbert Simon published "Rationality in Psychology and Economics" in the Journal of Business. Continuing with Simon's critique of neoclassical assumptions of economic behavior, Simon asserts that the standard of rationality used in neoclassical economic analysis is insufficient to analyze the real world. In particular, he critiques the over-use of assumptions in the works of Gary Becker and others, that he contends makes economic science unreplicable and ascientific. "Research into the decision-making process within economic organizations" won Simon the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 1978.

Jonathan and Gary are back with their usual laser-like focus on a single important topic--or maybe not. Starting at the recent release of the trailer for Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune, which has many of us looking back at Frank Herbert's classic novel, they touch upon re-reading old favourites, books that are genuinely sui generis and whether they have a lasting influence, other books that caused us to rethink the possibilities of SFF, "classics" or classic ideas that really don't hold up that well, and of course what they've been reading lately and might be thinking about for the...

In Massive Power Grab, Herbert Suspends State Election Law
Thursday March 26th 2020, (under the premise of a now debunked crisis) Governor Gary Herbert issued an executive order unilaterally suspending legislation and statute governing election law allowing candidates additional time to collect signatures to get on the ballot. This seemed like a blatant unconstitutional power grab, passing legislation (temporary I’m sure) independent of the legislature and a violation of the basic American principle of separation of powers. Unfortunately, though, it was the legislature, through what the founders called “pretend legislation”, that gave him this power just five years ago.Become a member of Defending Utah http://www.defend...

State‐Based Visas: Should States Lead on Immigration?
Reforming the immigration visa system is crucial for the future of the United States. In late 2019, Rep. John Curtis (R‑UT), supported by Gov. Gary Herbert, introduced a bill to create a state‐based visa system. Curtis’s proposal adopts a major component of the Canadian immigration system: visas sponsored by individual states rather than the federal government. Under the legislation, the federal government maintains control over admissions, security checks, and other necessary criteria, while the state governments gain power to select individual migrants and regulate their activity within the state. Each state would get an average of 10,000 visas a year...
