1 Samuel 3; Romans 3; Jeremiah 41; Psalm 17
The account of Gedaliah’s assassination and its aftermath (Jer. 41) is brutal and ugly. (1) The man responsible for Gedaliah’s death, Ishmael son of Nethaniah (Jer. 40:8; 41:1), was a man of royal blood, and may have been incensed because he was not the one the Babylonians appointed to rule the people. It is always shocking to see people scrambling for power even when there is nothing more than disaster and poverty over which to exercise power. (2) The depth of Ishmael’s perfidy is powerfully portrayed. To kill people at a meal you are sharing was far more s...

Day 223: Jeremiah 38-41
When life drops you into the pit, what comes out first—complaints or praise? In Jeremiah 38–41, the prophet is thrown into a mud-filled cistern for preaching an unpopular truth: surrender to Babylon as God’s instrument of judgment. This moment of near-death becomes the backdrop for Lamentations 3, where Jeremiah offers some of the most hope-filled words in Scripture. These chapters follow the devastating fall of Jerusalem, the cowardly flight of King Zedekiah, and Jeremiah’s decision to stay with his broken people instead of escaping to safety. In the darkest days, we see what true faithfulness and leadership look like.

JEREMIAH 42-43:I have always found it fascinating what Jeremiah experienced in the aftermath of the fall of Judah's kingdom to the king of Babylon. It is interesting to me that he was led away in chains along with everyone else captured. But the king of Babylon had heard of him and left instructions about him. And it is a shame what happened to Gedaliah. Evidently Jeremiah was not around at that point to warn him. PROVERBS 7:The father instructing his son continues from yesterday’s reading. What Next for China-Israel Ties After the Iran War
In the first few months of this year, it seemed that China's ties with Israel were on the mend after entering into a deep freeze following the October 7th terrorist attack by Hamas. China had begun to soften some of its rhetoric, and Israeli officials were keen to re-engage Beijing on economic issues. That momentum stalled in mid-June, though, when Israel launched an attack on Iran that prompted a strong rebuke by China at the United Nations. Now that the fighting has stopped and a tense ceasefire appears to be holding, there are indications both countries may...

Day 179: 2 Kings 24-25
After centuries of compromise, God finally lets His people go. Judah’s rebellion reaches its breaking point, and exile becomes inevitable. In today’s reading (2 Kings 24–25), Dr. Manny unpacks the fall of Jerusalem in three waves of Babylonian invasion. But even in the ashes, there’s a flicker of hope: a king in exile, dining at the enemy’s table. The judgment is real—but so is the mercy.✈️ Overview:• After Josiah’s death, Judah’s kings lead the nation into spiritual and political ruin• Babylon conquers Assyria and turns its attention to Judah, initiating three...

The Daily Sicha -
משיחת צום גדלי' (נדחה) – יהפך לשמחה – ה'תשד"מ ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=06-10-2024 Synopsis (1) The descent of exile, when “He scattered them among the nations” and “they were exiled from their Father’s table” – was the result of the Jewish people acting in a manner of discord and disconnectedness, the opposite of Ahavas Yisroel. But the purpose of the exile is for the subsequent ascent, the ingathering and unity of the entire Jewish people that will occur with the coming of Moshiach, which will be an even higher level than before the exile (as the Sages taught, it was a “The Holy One, blessed be He, did tzedakah for the Jewish people by scattering them among the nations”). The murder of Gedalia marked the utmost descent of exile, because now, whatever semblance of unity there had been before was destroyed, thus setting the platform for the subsequent ascent. Accordingly, we can understand the special quality Tzom Gedaliah will have over other fast days when they will be transformed to joy etc. (2) Regarding a deferred fast, our Rebbe’im would say, “May it be truly ‘deferred’” i.e., may it be abolished completely. This is especially emphasized in a year like this when 3 Tishrei falls out on Shabbos, so

Jeremiah tells us that after all the more important people were taken away to Babylon those who remained in Judah were in disarray. The one the Babylonians had put in charge (Gedaliah) had been murdered and others also (Ch.41 v.1-8); the murderers fled to the Ammonites.(v.15). Today’s chapter (42) tells us how the remaining people “from the least to the greatest, came near and said to Jeremiah the prophet. ‘Let our plea for mercy come before you, and pray to the LORD your God for us … that the LORD your God may show us the way we sh...

How Much Ammo Do You Really Need?
We all know that time when we were kids and we had to have that yucky medicine for what seemed like months but was really only 7-10 days. Is all of that trauma really necessary to put on kids? Can a lower dose and a less amount of days achieve the same outcome? How many days of exercise do the parents really need by chasing the kid around for an hour and then coaxing them for an hour to take the antibiotics? Find out on The RICU! Thanks for listening and we hope you enjoy i...

Achieving ROSC in A Heartbeat
Achieving ROSC in a Heartbeat: Improving Outcomes in In-Hospital Cardiac Arrests We all know that feeling-that shiver running down our spine, that skipped heartbeat we notice not on the patient monitor but coming from within our own selves, when that dreaded, yet all-to-frequent Code-Blue rings overhead. For as long as any of us can remember, ACLS guidelines for cardiac arrest include the same-old flow chart: begin CPR, attach pads, administer epi and amio, etc. But have you ever stopped and wondered how effective this age-old protocol actually is? Are we reviving enough of these patients to...

From Goldfish to PANDAS Featuring Dr. Kaplovitz
When it comes to PANDAS, your first thought probably wanders to cuddly black and white creatures munching on bamboo. And we don’t blame you. Who wants to think about neuropsychiatric complications of strep infections in kids? But hey, that’s why they send us to school for 12 years.. to think of these weird things. We hope you’ll enjoy this week’s episode where a pediatrician, Dr. Kaplovitz, discusses the wild range of treatment options from NSAIDs to antibiotics, and even IVIG, and how clinicians are diagnosing and treating PANDAS.

Zephaniah 1:1-2:3 Day of Wrath
The thirteenth century Dies irae (“Day of Wrath”) is one of the best-known hymns of the middle ages. Containing terrifying descriptions of the “tearful day” (Lacrimosa) in which the wicked are confounded (Confutatis maledictis) and consigned to “acrid flames,” this poem became a standard part of the medieval funeral liturgy. As such, it has been set to music numerous times by composers such as Mozart (Requiem K. 626, 1791) and Verdi (Messa de Requiem, 1874). Further, the chant melody first associated with this text, with its seesawing half-step motion, is often used as a musical trope indicating death, mourning, or the supernatural. You can hear...

Messages from the Word of God
Don't Make It Worse (Jer 43.1-13) - 8-15-21
Scripture texts are Jeremiah 43.1-13 and 1Peter 5.1-11 from the thought, “Don’t Make It Worse”. Gedaliah was appointed governor of the remnant of Judah by King Nebuchadnezzar. He told the people to serve peacefully under the Babylonians. Some plotted to take Gedaliah’s life. After the assassination, they asked Jeremiah to pray for God’s guidance. They were afraid of what the king might do. Should they stay or flee to Egypt? We shall examine three traits that made things worse for the remnant of Judah.1. PRIDE (Jeremiah 43.1-3) says I know more than others. At worst i...

An Attack on the Plaque
An Attack on the Plaque: Fighting Alzheimer’s Disease using a monoclonal antibody against Beta-Amyloid plaque build-up. A cure for Alzheimer’s Disease remains frustratingly elusive to scientists and clinicians. The characteristic build-up of beta-amyloid protein and hyper-phosphorylated Tau protein causes irreversible damage to cognitive function and memory. In this week’s episode, we’ll dive into a fascinating discussion on a breakthrough monoclonal antibody that reduces the build-up of plaque in the brain. It’s like fluoride for the brain! (Although not yet recommended by 9/10 neurologists). The implications of this journal article are astounding. We hope you...

Hold the Haldol: Exploring the Role of Cholinergics in Schizophrenia
Until now, schizophrenia and other psychotic diseases were consistently treated with heavy duty, anti-dopaminergic, anti-psychotic medications. These drugs- both first and second generation- carry serious and sometimes irreversible adverse effects (think: EPS, NMS, etc.) In today’s episode, we’ll discuss a groundbreaking phase-2 clinical trial exploring the use of a muscarinic agonist in the treatment of schizophrenia. Worried about DUMBBELLS? So were we! But these researchers have designed a truly elegant cholinergic/anti-cholinergic duet. This is an exciting article you don’t want to miss out on!
