Bletchley Park
E130 – Action This Day
October 2021 On the 21st of October 1941, four of Bletchley Park’s Codebreakers sent a plea for more staff and resources in a now notorious letter to the Prime Minister. Demand for Bletchley Park’s work was increasing, and the organisation was facing a crisis. Churchill was won over, adding the note ‘Action This Day’ to the document. But perhaps the changes that followed weren’t just the result of the Prime Minister’s influence. In this ‘It Happened Here’ episode, Dr Thomas Cheetham explores the problems the Codebreakers were facing and how this letter was only part of the wider story...

Celebratin’ TEN YEARS of Soundcasting!
Welcome to this milestone episode of our little soundcast, which is – this week – celebrating TEN YEARS of doing whatever it is that we do. It made only be Episode 248 (maybe we didn’t drop installments quite as regularly as we should have for a big chunk of the past decade…), but it is still 10 friggin’ years of churning out that sweet, sweet soundcast magic. In honor of that, and the fact that we seem to be solidly on the downward side of the bell-shaped curve coming out of the coronavirus pandemic, the staff and management of this show have...

Bletchley Park
Intelligence Insight No. 003
April 2020 Over the years we have been very fortunate to welcome the families of some of our more famous Codebreakers for a visit to Bletchley Park. The families always have such an immense pride in their ancestors and the work they did for GC&CS and it’s always an honour for the podcast to sit down with them for our listeners. Following on from our last podcast, Invasion Norway, where we looked at the vital work Harry Hinsley carried out in the Naval Section, we go back to 2017 when two of his children, Clarissa & Hugo paid a visit with 3 gener...

#AudioMo 2018 - Day 11 - Geoffrey Welchman
I thought I would finish of this week’s AudioMo’s with another interview from The Bletchley Park Podcast. I’ve been producing the show for nearly 6 years now and during that time I’ve interviewed so many people. Lots of those interviews stand out for me especially the ones with Veterans, but this one has a very special place for me. During WW2 Gordon Welchman was one of the most important members of staff at Bletchley Park working directly with Alan Turing to design The Bombe Machine but maybe more importantly for Geoffrey’s, he was his grandfather. I had got to...

FarFetchedFables No 184 Russell Hemmell
“M” by Russell Hemmell(Originally published in Not One of Us.)We look like them, Christian thought, admiring the fresco in the charnel house and its ghastly figures, scary and eerily beautiful. He adjusted the heavy cloak over his shoulders. The evening was damp and cold, and he was tired after a whole day on the move. But he could not avoid that feeling of elation. He had followed her for too long, and days had become months. Years. Winters, summers, clear starry nights of patient stalking. Across desolate land...

E50 - The Welchman Connection
September 2016 Action This Day! In our historic anniversary-based series, It Happened Here, we look at a paper-based act of daring which changed the course of history. Seventy five years ago Winston Churchill visited Bletchley Park, amid the utmost secrecy. He understood how important the intelligence being produced was, and valued it highly. He gave a morale-boosting speech to the Codebreakers, and we hear from Sir Arthur Bonsall, who stumbled across the PM on his way to lunch. Once the euphoria of the VIP visit had worn off, a group of young men who...

Royal Episode 7: Obscure Matter
Our ornithological Reigning Lunatic turns his gaze to the heavens! Yes, listener-peasant, the Royal Astronomer is called upon to discuss the feasibility of certain space-weapons. And clearly, technology is at the center of it, as brief visits from Tech Support and a Foole attest. But it is the discovery of "Obscure Matter" that really gets a response, although it wasn't the response the Royal Astronomer hoped for. Thence it is left to the Wizard of the Day to Say the Sooth. Royal Episode the 6: Pillows!
The Reigning Lunatic demands an explanation of the original title, which was to be "The Case of the Exploding Pillow," but was changed to "Pillows" due to concerns about undercurrents of regicide. (and because it was too long) The Royal Scriptwriters are forced to explain themselves, and in so doing, weave a dramatic scene with their winsome words. Then comes more news of trouble for the Grand Border Wall! Rebels attack the Eastern Border, leaving the Reigning Lunatic in a slough of despond, which is only lifted after a visit from the Learned Professor prompts a new and brilliant idea! ...
