Art That Shapes Space
The English script is below. —[English script]002: Art That Shapes SpaceHello, this is Hiromi Kim.In this program, I share stories about art, materials, and space—told from the perspective of design and culture. The theme of this second episode is "Art That Shapes Space."Through my own series of works called HEMP, particularly the piece titled ZAMA, I’d like to explore how art influences and transforms the spaces we inhabit. When people hear the word "art," they often think of something to look at—something visual. But through my creative process, I’ve come to believe that art is a much more multi-sensory experience.Within a space, it's not just our eyes that are engaged—our perception is also shaped by sound, touch, and even the subtle atmosphere.Especially in urban environments, invisible noise can cause stress or discomfort without us even realizing it.My HEMP series aims to respond not only to visual beauty, but also to the needs of space itself.Let me share three ways my works interact with space:First, the interplay of light and shadow. The softness of hemp fibers and their geometric composition create a rhythm and stillness in the space. As natural light or artificial lighting changes throughout the day, the piece takes on new expressions—ever-shifting and alive.Second, acoustic function. Each piece is backed with sound-absorbing material, reducing echo and blocking external noise. This is especially effective in galleries, hotels, libraries, or offices—places that call for a sense of calm and quiet.Third, the presence of the material itself. The natural texture of hemp has a gentle, grounding effect on our senses. It brings warmth and comfort to the space. In this way, my work is not just something decorative—it has the role of "tuning" or "balancing" the environment. So, the HEMP series isn’t just a wall decoration. It is art that engages in dialogue with the architecture and resonates with its surroundings.Over the years, I’ve had many conversations and collaborations with architects and interior designers. What I’ve learned is that today’s spaces require

The English script is below. ----------[English Script]Hello. I'm Hiromi Kim, a designer and artist. In this channel, I will be providing easy-to-understand information on art, architecture, and sustainable materials from an expert's perspective.Today's theme is why hemp now? Hemp is a natural material that has been with humanity for thousands of years. Why is it attracting attention again around the world now? Hemp is a fiber obtained from the stem of the cannabis plant and has been used for various purposes since ancient times, such as clothing and rope paper. In Japan, it was used for Shimenawa (sacred ropes) at shrines, amulets, and costumes for Shinto rituals, and was a special material with a sacred meaning. However, due to postwar regulations, it disappeared from everyday life. Now, hemp is attracting attention again around the world as a sustainable material of the future. There are three main reasons why it is attracting attention. The first is its low environmental impact. Compared to cotton, hemp uses about a quarter of the water and does not require pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The second is its regenerative power and speed. It grows so quickly that it can be harvested in 90 to 120 days, and it also has the power to enrich the soil. The third is versatility. It has a wide range of industrial uses, from medicine and paper bioplastics to building materials and food.I myself have been creating works using hemp for over 10 years.Hemp is not just an eco-friendly material, but is deeply connected to my theme of making the invisible visible.Next time, I will talk about art that organizes spaces.

Keep It Fictional
It's Our Turn to Get Recommendations
The tables have turned! This week, instead of recommending books we have read and loved, we had to read books someone else has recommended to us. These books include a melancholic read with not much happening, a thrift shop with eccentric customers, a queen who doesn't want to die, and a detective taking witness statements from ghosts. Are the Keep It Fictional librarians good at taking recommendations? Let's find out. Books mentioned on this show: At Dusk by Hwang Sok-yong, translated by Sora Kim-Russell, The Nakano Thrift Shop by Hiromi Kawakami, translated by Allison Markin Powell, The Snow Queen...

Discovering Jazz
Archives: Episode 19, Jazz Beatles
This week, as part of my ‘summer re-runs’, I feature Beatles tunes that have been adapted to jazz. Most are exquisitely done; some maybe not so much. And not only that I interview John Lennon. Okay—not really! What it is is interesting clips from an interview I did with Michael Gagliano, who starred as John Lennon in a London, England tribute show called Let It Be. Some of the great jazz artists you’ll hear in this podcast are Chick Corea and Hiromi, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Larry Coryell, Herbie Hancock, Interactivo, Jaco Pastorius, Shawn an...

GTLF2019 - Women Writing the Body
Women’s bodies have long been objectified in popular entertainment, as well as in art and literature. How do women write about their own bodies, subverting the “male gaze” and articulating their own experiences, ambivalences and obsessions on subjects like eroticism, motherhood, illness, and aging? Speakers: Hiromi Ito, Ameena Hussein, Kim Yideum, Regina Ibrahim Moderator: Dina Zaman
