Love and Death: 'In Memoriam' by Tennyson
Tennyson described 'In Memoriam' as ‘rather the cry of the whole human race than mine’, and the poem achieved widespread acclaim as soon as it was published in 1850, cited by Queen Victoria as her habitual reading after the death of Prince Albert. Its subject is the death in 1833 of Tennyson’s friend Arthur Hallam at the age of 22, and in its 131 sections it explores the possibilities of elegy more extensively than any English poem before it, not least in its innovative, incantatory rhyme scheme, intended to numb the pain of grief. From its repeated dramatisations of the experience of privat...

Roger Hallam, the co-founder in 2018 of Extinction Rebellion, was recently released after nearly four months on jail. He was imprisoned for making a 20-minute speech on zoom. He was arrested and jailed because he called for civil disobedience by climate activists, specifically the blocking of major road networks in London. Hallam is one of the most important and fearless leaders in the climate movement. He was arrested in 2017 after spray painting King's College London's Great Hall. He was charged with criminal damage and fined £500. He was later cleared after a court ruled his actions were a proportionate response to t...

from the upcoming album Be Yourself in 11 Easy Lessons The centuries old idea of a changeling – a fairy left in place of a stolen human child – has never died. Soap Bubble
A poem by Ian Badcoe about the bubbles on bubbles that humanity has been blowing over the centuries: system on system built on all too finite natural resources, but acting as if they would last forever. Bubbles in the economic sense, working fine while they stumble along, but hollow if you look too close, and building up huge ecological and social impacts for when they fail. This issue has been of great importance to me for a long time and so I have taken up the challenge and set the poem to music; creating a haunting and tragic message that...

Run For Your Life (Stop Homophobia!)
written and performed by Hallam London produced and mixed by Dave Sanderson The anti-homophobia song Run For Your Life combines the British influenced Indie Rock of Hallam London’s upcoming album with Synth Pop for the dancefloor. The song is a sarcastic take on the common homophobic claim that sharing rights means dividing them. Hallam wrote it in anger after the umpteenth repeat of the perennial debate about marriage equality. Producer Dave Sanderson (Reverend and the Makers, 65daysofstatic) from Sheffield ingeniously unearthed the song’s musical essence as a danceable indie track. Music video: https://youtu.be/DEC6rjz7E2w
