Yard Duty: The Art and Science of Modern Schooling
Adam Smith's impact on the craft of teaching
Are we giving our young teachers enough time to master their craft? Or are we setting them up to fail? In this episode, Michael argues that teaching is a craft. Why does this matter? Of course, that hasn’t done anything to the Donald’s base of support other than cause them to feel even more justified in their disdain for “blue” states and compel them to send their “billionaire” leader more than $50m in new campaign contrib...

Ryan Hanley on the Morality of Markets
Send us a textRyan Hanley is a professor of political science at Boston College and the author of several books, including Our Great Purpose: Adam Smith on Living a Better Life. Today, he talks to us about the foundations of Adam Smith’s theory of virtue and proceeds to lay this theory out for us. [Rest]: What Most People Get Wrong About Rest
We have an idea that resting means doing nothing. And it’s true that sometimes rest is passive. Examples of passive rest include: Sleeping Napping Getting a massage or other type of treatment, like acupuncture or reiki Watching a show or movie Lazing around and staring at the wall All amazing forms of rest. I recommend them all highly. But it’s a pretty short list that leaves out a whole other vital category of rest–and this is something that most people don’t even consider: active rest.

Today I'm talking with Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a Board-Certified internal medicine physician and work-life integration researcher. She's also the author of the book Sacred Rest. I'm fangirling a little bit because when Dr. Dalton-Smith was interviewed on a local NPR program, a friend of mine sent a link to our group chat and was so excited to tell us that being well-rested isn't just about getting sleep! We all got very excited to hear Dr. Dalton-Smith's message, because most of us, including me, struggle to get enough sleep a lot of the time. And I'm excited to share it...
