Why are period tracking apps getting so popular?
Period tracking apps help you track your menstrual cycle, so you know when to expect your period. They’re growing in popularity worldwide, with the three most popular ones racking up over 250 million downloads between them. But studies show that some women might also be using them to avoid getting pregnant. One of the apps, Natural Cycles, has been approved in the US to be used as a contraceptive. The company claims it is 93% effective at preventing pregnancies, when used perfectly. So why are more people turning to these apps? Are they safe to use as a co...

Killing Amid The Fog Of War / Harriet Shawcroft / Frederick Carter
Wilfred Owen’s infamously chilling poem, written about a gas attack in WW1, is still a stark reminder of the brutality of war over 100 years later. A small segment of Dulce et Decorum est reads, “Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind,Drunk with fatigue, deaf even to the hoots,Of gas-shells dropping softly behind”…Was the physical and mental trauma of such horrors enough to drive a young man to kill when he returned home from war?…...

Harriet Knight and Hannah Penn on an agency world that’s open to all
This week we made difficult phone-calls to Ant & Dec, Torvill & Dean and, accidentally, the Neville Brothers, all in order to explain that the nation now has a new favourite double act – the joint chiefs of Pablo, Harriet Knight and Hannah Penn. Not content with leading Pablo to the very top of the creative charts in agency land – scooping up the Global Campaign Indie of the Year award on two separate occasions – H&H have set about tearing up the dusty old rulebook for agency leadership (especially all those pages about being greedy and horrible). They’ve poured their consider...

How politicians use styling to win hearts (and votes)
In South Korea, what presidential candidates are wearing is a hot topic.People use fashion to express themselves. Many of us think carefully about what we put on and how others will view our outfits, whether we choose an iconic hat or a monochrome look. But for politicians and their spouses, every look is carefully calculated to send a specific message.South Korea is having a snap election which means that image consultants are quietly shaping the new public faces of leadership, from tie colours to jumpers to hairstyles. Axolotls: How the endangered amphibian is making a comeback
Axolotls are only found in the wild in one place in the world; an area of wetland just outside Mexico City. They are one of the world’s most endangered, and arguably most adorable, amphibians. Not just meme-worthy, they are also scientifically fascinating - they don’t really age and they can regrow body parts, including their brains. Very few are left in the wild, but now scientists have released captive-bred axolotls back into the wetlands and found that they not only survived, but even put on a bit of weight. BBC science correspondent Victoria Gill talks us through the...

China’s cosmetic surgery industry has exploded over the past decade and in turn, put even more pressure on young women to conform to unrealistic beauty standards. Could China replace the US as a global aid giver?
One of the most eye-catching decisions by Donald Trump since becoming American President for a second time was to freeze foreign aid. USAID is the agency that’s given billions of dollars to global projects, from disaster relief to fighting malaria. With this decision there will be a big hole in global financing, one that could potentially be filled by other leading global countries, such as China. President Xi has already upped China’s foreign spending in places like Africa. Chinese investing in huge infrastructure projects abroad isn’t new, but could they use America’s decisi...

With the intelligence Tubman gathered, she and Colonel James Montgomery led 150 Black soldiers on a daring raid along the Combahee RIver in June 1863, destroying seven rice plantations in the heart of the Confederate breadbasket, causing $6 million worth of damages and liberating 756 people from enslavement on the ri...

Making soil health approachable and practical, with Ian Robertson
By now I’m sure many of you have heard the few episodes on soil health that I’ve recorded with people like Harriet Mela, Matt Powers, James White, and others. I know that the subject of soil has become really popular with growers and it’s always talked about as being central to the success of regenerative agriculture and broader environmental health, and I don’t disagree. Yet I’m often worried that the discourse around soil science is reminiscent of other scientific studies in which there’s a never ending search for more granular details. Breaking comp...

Geology Bites
Harriet Lau on the Motions of the Earth on Timescales from Hours to Millennia
The subfield of geology called geodynamics most commonly refers to the motions associated with convection in the mantle. These are slow by human standards and lead to phenomena such as plate motions, seafloor spreading, mountain building, and volcanos. But the Earth’s interior actually undergoes motion on a whole range of timescales. The shortest of these occurs within seismic waves – in which the vibrations triggered by earthquakes cause tiny elastic movements of the material as they pass through. And the longest of these are the large-scale viscous motions of the convecting mantle driven by the temperature difference between the bottom an...
