No. 2 Strath Haven and No. 1 West Chester Rustin played for the District 1 Class 5A championship Friday night. And, boy, did they deliver. In a game full of twists and turns, it seemed to call for a special ending.

The luxury of having a stable full of running backs, as Strath Haven does, is that any one of those ball carriers can go off on a given night. Friday night, it was Matt Shuler’s turn.

Through a satisfying regular season that invited visions of postseason success, almost everything Strath Haven tried on offense worked as designed. To Sam Milligan, though, there was still one thing missing.
Just once, the Panthers’ quarterback occasionally would think to himself, he wouldn’t mind running a ball into the end zone.
“I was definitely missing that,” Milligan said Friday, with a smile. “So it was exciting.”

Strath Haven’s offense has been on some kind of roll.

Last night the Strath Haven Grid Iron Club celebrated the 2000 PIAA 5A state football championship season by hosting many of the players that made that championship a reality. 20+ years later it is still the ONLY 2 football championship won by a Delco team (Strath Haven had also won the previous championship in 1999).

Strath Haven used a solid, consistent ground attack to defeat Conestoga 35-14 in a matchup of one-loss teams teams Friday evening at Teamer Field.

Three times Strath Haven senior Charlie Shankweiler visualized how his 31-yard field goal attempt could bring redemption Friday night.
Once after a Panthers timeout to set up the kick with the game tied and three seconds left, again after a timeout by Springfield and finally after another timeout to ice him. In the back of Shankweiler’s mind was the PAT attempt blocked after the first Panthers touchdown.

In a terrific football game on a beautiful day the Freshman Panther football team handed the Garnet Valley Jaguars their first defeat of the season, 26-20.
It was a well played game for both teams on both sides of the ball but the Panthers took the lead late in the 4th quarter and then recovered a Jag fumble with less than two minute to play, sealing the victory.

The junior fullback needed to gain two yards on fourth down late in the fourth quarter of Strath Haven’s 49-35 victory at Haverford. The brawny Crawford is extremely difficult to tackle when he’s running behind his line, but he required a friendly boost on this particular play. Friday night was all about revenge for Nate Perlman and the Strath Haven football team.
Sweet revenge.
“They beat us last year and we were down after our loss to them,” said Perlman, the Panthers’ outstanding defensive end/linebacker. “We wanted to prevent that this year.”

Last year around this time, Strath Haven was making another epic run through the Class 5A football playoffs. This year the Panthers been living out of coach Kevin Clancy’s trunk, the locker room basically off limits to comply with strict COVID-19 protocols.
