Episode 45. Shattered – The Split Mind of Schizophrenia
In this podcast episode, I explore the diverse facets of the debilitating mental illness schizophrenia. I particularly highlight its varied manifestations such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganised thoughts and abnormal behaviours.I illustrate these concepts with insightful illness memoirs, such as the classics Is There No Place on Earth for Me, by Susan Sheehan, The Centre Cannot Hold, by Ellen Saks, and A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar'. These especially demonstrate the frequent manifestation of the disease as paranoid schizophrenia with grandiose and paranoid delusions. I use these memoirs to explore the genetic, environmental and maternal risks factors...

EP1. Believe Nothing Until it is Officially Denied! With guest Patrick Cockburn
For 50 years Patrick Cockburn has been practicing the art of journalism with integrity and persistence: a specialist on the Middle East, he has written extensively on wars and political machinations from Beirut to Belfast and Baghdad. Within books like ‘The Occupation and Saddam Hussein: An American Obsession’ (written with his brother Andrew), he has revealed the workings of Arab dictatorships and Western Imperialism and hubris alike. Over the last decade, he has also created a separate, no less distinguished profile as a memoirist: ‘The Broken Boy’ describes his survival of a Polio epidemic in 1950s Cork, while ‘Henry's Dem...

Each week as I prepare to get going on another upcoming show, a new release, movie or TV show, event, or person can serve as an inspiration to get the creative juices flowing and on this week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #475 ) it was a combination of those elements that played out. Get in touch! The Blues deals with very personal types of pain. But it doesn’t wallow in self-pity. The blues is about overcoming – like Martin Luther King Jr. used in his marches – “We Shall Overcome”. Great blues is all about a catharsis – a purging – of the things that hurt us so that we can go on living better lives! Nothing captures the Christian sense of death and redemption like the blues; When you think of the blues, you think about misfortune, betrayal and regret. You lose your job, you get the blues. Creation: Relationship & Fracture
We are back to the Narrative Lectionary, and we kick off this year's journey through the biblical text with a Genesis creation account. In it, humans are created from the earth, for the plants, intrinsically connected to one another, and intimately sculpted and in-spired by God our Maker. Almost as soon as these relationships with earth, humans, and God are crafted, there is fracturing of our primal inter-connectedness. Is there any word of hope for we who are choking on the wildfire smoke of those fractures today? [Sermon begins at 22:55]--Scripture: Genesis 2.4b-7, 15-17; 3.1-8...

I thought I'd start today's show off with a quote by Beverley Nichols from his book, Sunlight on the Lawn: “Why do insurance companies, when they want to describe an act of God, invariably pick on something which sounds much more like an act of the Devil? One would think that God was exclusively concerned in making hurricanes, smallpox, thunderbolts, and dry rot. They seem to forget that He also manufactures rainbows, apple-blossom, and Siamese kittens. However, that is, perhaps, a diversion.” This quote by Nichols came to mind when I heard the wondrous story about the little tomato plant...
