New Things Under the Sun
Importing Knowledge
When a scientist or inventor migrates, they take their knowledge with them. And in the right environment, that knowledge can act as the seed of something much larger than an individual can accomplish. This is an audio read through of the (initial draft of the) article Importing Knowledge, published on New Things Under the Sun.Articles Mentioned:Moser, Petra, Alessandra Voena, and Fabian Waldinger. 2014.

The cultural tranmission of the fertility transition: Evidence from internal migrations in 19th century France
Hillel Rapoport (Paris School of Economics) looks at theories of migrants' social remittances in a historical context relating to fertility in 19th century France France experienced a demographic transition earlier than richer and more educated countries. This presentation offers a novel explanation for this puzzle that emphasises the diffusion of culture and information through internal migration. It tests how migration affected fertility by building a decennial bilateral migration matrix between French regions for 1861–1911. The identification strategy uses exogenous variation in transportation costs resulting from the construction of railways. The results suggest the convergence towards low birth rates can be explained by...
