Christine wonders why we are so afraid to be vulnerable. It seems moms need permission to have a different breastfeeding experience. While we don't think they need our permission, it seems that moms have such guilt that having an experienced lactation consultant tell them that it there situation is difficult. It is okay if things are not going as planned. This is hard. And it is okay if you aren't exclusively breastfeeding.

When I talk to parents, the belief is that if your baby has a tongue tie, you will probably not be able to enjoy normal and comfortable breastfeeding. Dominique found it hard to believe that her third babies tie was the reason for her painful breastfeeding because her other babies who were diagnosed with tongue tie breastfed just fine. She had no pain, she had plenty of milk they gained really well and they breastfed for well over a year. I wanted to address this issue so noone leaves confused.

I know that as an IBCLC, I should probably stick to the letter of the law, so to speak and correct moms who say they are tandem nursing their twins. They are happy. They are proud. They are doing this extraordinary act of taking care of their little ones. The last thing I am going to do is make a big stink about the correctness of the definition. I just want them to enjoy themselves and feel proud of what they are doing.

All infants in need deserve to have human milk. Our most smallest and sickest of babies need to have donor milk to help them get the best start in life. Donor milk will help dramatically reduce the risk of succumbing to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which is a really bad infection that causes their gut to slough off and die. Premies are more susceptible to this then full term babies. The reason donor milk is often needed for these babies is because their moms have not gone through the full 40 weeks gestation. This time period allows their mammary glands to prepar...
