Episode 47 - When the Moonies Came to Hollywood feat. Elle Hardy
We're joined this week by Elle Hardy (Hell To Pay, https://www.ellehardy.com/) to discuss Inchon! (1981), a war film funded in part by Korea's own Unification Church a.k.a. the Moonies! This award-winning film (four whole Razzies!) is such a slog, but Elle makes it bearable. It's a great conversation on who the Moonies are and the circumstances that led to their involvement in this production.Watch Inchon! for yourself here: https://youtu.be/O3FC5CPt9C0?si=XmnKD_M23B1W5ScUGot something to say to...

Victory At High Tide
The Korean peninsula was split into two countries after the Second World War. The Soviet backed North and the U.S. backed South. North Korea tried to unify the two by invading South Korea in June 1950. Initially North Korea had great success. It pushed South Korea's small military aside and rushed down the peninsula while the United States tried to get forces onto the peninsula. The North Koreans were finally stopped around the port of Pusan at the very bottom of the Korean peninsula. While fighting around Pusan was going on, the U.S. commander, General Douglas MacArthur, contemplated his ne...

The successful Allied capture of Inchon and Seoul, together with the Eighth Army’s breakout from the Pusan Perimeter, forced the North Korean army to rapidly retreat northward and brought the Allied forces to the 38th Parallel. Now, General MacArthur was faced with a decision…should the Allies dig in and consolidate their gains, daring the North Koreans to attack them? Or should they advance further to the north and take control of all Korea? In this episode, Evan and James discuss MacArthur’s fateful decision to…well, listen, and you will find out! Retreat, Hell!

KW3: The Allies Strike Back: Inchon, Seoul, and the Breakout
Soon after the North Korean invasion of the South, Allied Supreme Military Commander General Dougas MacArthur began planning a surprise amphibious assault on the key port city of Inchon, which was more than 100 miles behind North Korean lines. This attack was risky for many reasons, but if it succeeded, MacArthur believed, it would force the North Korean army to retreat back into the North and possibly result in the capture of much of the North Korean army. Ralph Gastelum grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and never experienced much of a winter before joining the U.S. Marine Corps. ”The Forgotten War” - Korea, The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir
The Korean War was fought from 1950 until 1953 and pitted the United States, South Korea, and their U.N. allies against North Korea and the Chinese Communists. The invading North Korean troops were able to capture Seoul within three days-the first of four times that city would exchange hands-and quickly pushed their opponets back to the so called Pusan Perimeter in the extreme southeastern portion of the peninsula. The tide turned that September due to a surprise amphibious landing that General MacArthur executed behind enemy lines at Inchon, the port for Seoul. When U.N. troops then pushed deep into...

North Korea tried to unify the peninsula by invading South Korea in June 1950. Initially the North Koreans had great success. They quickly advanced south while the United States tried to get forces onto the peninsula to stop them. This soon became a United Nations’ mission, and the North Koreans were stopped right around the southern port of Pusan. Then the United States landed in the rear of the North Koreans at the port of Inchon next to Seoul on South Korea’s west coast. MacArthur goes back to Tokyo, convinced the war is already over. But he doesn’t want to stop at driving the North back behind the 38th parallel. He wants to control the entire country.

Coming Together/Coming Apart: A History of the Korean War
Intermission: September-October, 1950
After their massive success at Inchon and on the Pusan Perimeter, the UN Forces were finally backing away from the brink of disaster. That role was now held by the North Koreans, who were retreating as fast as they could back across the 38th Parallel. The big question now was: would they be followed by the South Koreans and their American allies?

Defending Korea and a Letter to Pvt. Parker: John Stevens
On June 25, 1950, North Korea launched a surprise invasion against South Korea and started a war that has not yet been formally ended. It was almost a short war. The North Korean invasion force consisted of more than a hundred Soviet tanks and an air force – all armaments that had devastated the German army on the eastern front during the Second World War only 5 years previously. By contrast, the South Korean army had no tanks and an air force composed solely of reconnaissance planes. Predictably, South Korea’s capital Seoul fell in three days. And b...

Korean War #31: Laying Down The Gauntlet
Episode 31: Laying Down The Gauntlet looks at the other side of the coin and how the Americans reacted to the developing war in the late summer of 1950. MacArthur attempted to follow War Plan SL-17, which stipulated that a landing at Inchon should take place in response to a Northern surge down the peninsula, but problems existed in this plan, and MacArthur faced a conundrum throughout July 1950 as he tried to adapt to the curious nature of the communist advance. Pusan, it was clear, would be the holding action, and the test of allied mettle before reinforcements arrived.

MacArthur and the 5000 to 1 Gamble
The amphibious invasion at Inchon in September of 1950 was General MacArthur’s greatest battlefield triumph. It completely surprised the North Korean forces and altered the momentum of the Korean War. Although the invasion was ultimately successful, in the beginning there was little support for it and many were convinced that Inchon would be a disaster. This month, we take a look at how MacArthur ultimately packaged and sold the idea of landing at Inchon to its critics.Have a comment about this episode? Send us a text message!
