Anti-Colonialism, Anarchism, and M.P.T. Acharya
In 1908, an Indian revolutionary from Madras arrived in Marseille, France, and later travelled to Paris, London, Lisbon, New York, Berlin, and Russia with two main objectives: to unveil the brutality of British colonialism and to reject the idea of the universalisation of the nation-state. He made significant contributions to our understanding of resistance to oppression in all its forms, as embodied by the nation-state. He was one of India’s most prominent anarchist activists and theoreticians, M.P.T. Acharya. To explain his life trajectory and the various themes that have shaped it, we are in conversation with historian Ol...

Shubman Gill back in T20Is for Asia Cup: Injustice to Shreyas Iyer? | Sledging Room, S03 Ep 10
India have named a 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025, starting on 9 September. While Shubman Gill’s return to the T20I format – and that too as vice-captain – grabbed the headlines, a few notable omissions raised eyebrows. Has Gill’s comeback unsettled a well-oiled T20I line-up? What happens to Sanju Samson’s role as opener now? And, more importantly, what more does Shreyas Iyer need to do to break into this Indian T20I side? The two icons of Indian cricket are back in the news. After India fought hard to draw the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, there’s calm after the storm with no international assignments scheduled for the men’s team until the Asia Cup in September. However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have once again been dragged into the headlines. Reports are circulating that the two players might retire after the ODIs in Australia this October. But why? Kohli and Rohit are still among India’s best one-day batters, and both have expressed their desire to play in the 2027 World Cup. Why are we...

Burnout doesn’t always announce itself with a breakdown. Often, it arrives quietly — in the form of exhaustion you ignore, boundaries you blur, or joy that slowly fades. We’ll look at the subtle signs we often overlook, the cost of chronic self-neglect, and how to gently begin the journey back to ourselves. Hero or Villain: Was Jadeja’s Lord’s Knock What India Needed? | Sledging Room S3 Ep 05
It was a heartbreak of epic proportions for India at Lord’s. Chasing 193, they were reduced to 82 for 7 and then 112 for 8. Just when it seemed England would wrap things up on the final morning and head in for a relaxed Lord’s lunch, Ravindra Jadeja stood tall with a resolute act of defiance. He faced 181 deliveries for a gritty 61, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj for company. But did India miss a trick by not being more proactive while Jadeja was batting with the tail? While it may be unfair to expect Jadeja to take undue risks, was ther...

Shubman Gill’s India crash in Leeds. New team, same problems? Sledging Room | S3 Ep 02
It was truly a baptism by fire for Shubman Gill in his Test captaincy debut. India lost a match they could have—and perhaps should have—won, despite racking up over 800 runs across two innings, fuelled by four centurions and a five-wicket haul from their pace spearhead. Yet, as a new era of Indian Test cricket began, they were once again undone by familiar frailties that have plagued them in the past. England, it must be said, made light work of a daunting 371-run target on the final day.Over the course of a fiercely contested five days at H...

The phenomenal challenge posed by counterfeiting: what are we going to do?
Counterfeiting along with copyright infringements, is big business, it is extremely lucrative for criminals, the EU alone estimates an annual cost of €50 billion. It takes place across sectors, it is international and perhaps most worryingly it is driven by demand. Of course, it is illegal, more specifically it is used to fund organised crime; it supports child exploitation; it can create serious threats to heath for example by containing poisonous substitutes in drink and food or in say medicines lacking active ingredients; and it results in fraudulent product warranty claims. Moreover, it undermines legitimate business; generates the potential for co...

This session is sponsored by Altia https://www.altiaintel.com/We tend to think of fraud as an offence committed because an opportunity presents itself and that some individuals will take advantage of these situations because they are motivated by greed. Whereas, increasingly we are witnessing more organised and sophisticated fraudulent attacks against organisations, many of which involve considerable planning. In order to ensure that our controls are sufficient enough to mitigate against these risks, we need to be able to identify the relevant warning signs, or ‘red flags’ that alert us to potential fraudulent activity. Over recent months there have been growing concerns about the mental health of a range of workers. These have ranged from those working from home for long periods without appropriate support; those who have been concerned about the stability of their roles; and those working on the frontline dealing with the consequences of the pandemic. Some see lockdown restrictions as draconian or at least an ‘over the top’ reaction, and setting dangerous precedents. The perception of the competence of frontline officers reflects on how the security sector is perceived. The language used is important. We have seen on previous webinars that the word ‘guard’ is sometimes used as a pejorative word, outdated and no longer reflecting what people do. "Nadi" leaves are details of a past and present life written by Saint Agasthiya on leaves that have been well preserved and looked after by a legacy of priests in South India. Of course I was never going to forget her as you do not have such conversations with just anyone. Much later I learnt that Laavenia was an Egyptian lineage energy healer, a tarot reader and teacher and...
