Indyref 10th Anniversary : Holyrood Rally Speeches
On 18th September 2024 we marked the 10th anniversary of the historic first Scottish Independence Referendum, Indyref for short. During a passionate and exhilarating campaign, support for the Yes side grew from around 30% to over 50% before settling back at 45% on the day of the vote. In the words of Professor Sir John Curtace, the Yes side lost the vote but we won the campaign. Support for independence has hovered around the 50% mark for the last decade. Campaign group Believe In Scotland organised events throughout Scotland to mark the occasion. The mood was reflective, but upbeat and determined. We are S...

It is ON! Today the FM announces the date for Indyref 2 and sets out the process to take us there, with a plan B as backup in case the Westminster government continues to deny democracy. A powerful performance, and seems to have taken the opposition by surprise, judging by their responses.

Englishman Talking to a Scot We focus on the Andrew Marr show followed by two articles in the Sunday Times by Alex Massie. In interview by Marr, Northern Ireland FM Arlene Foster avoided the word ‘border’, reminding us that it's 100 years since the current United Kingdom union began and that the Brexit NI protocol can be ended by a Stormont vote in four years. Then in interview, PM Johnson failed to affect Stewart’s blood pressure and revealed little for a Monday tabloid headline though Marr challenged him over what democratic tools were left for a pro Scottish independence vo...

Scottish Unionist Think Tank, A Force For Good, presents our 29th Saturday Street Stall. Director Alistair McConnachie says it's astonishing that "local panjandrums" such as the Welsh First Minister can "close the border" with England. If this sort of aggressive behaviour is allowed by the British Parliament, then do we even have "a United Kingdom" anymore? We should not be allowing the carve-up of our UK in this way. What happened to our basic right of freedom of movement!Indeed, we seem to be losing lots of things which we previously considered part of our British Constitution, including...

ScotIndyPod 101 - Robin McAlpine
For the 101st episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke with Robin McAlpine of the Reid Foundation, The Common Weal and much more besides. We spoke about some of the ways in which the Common Weal project has moved forward since the referendum, and there is much of note in that. We also talked about why Robin feels some of these new directions are necessary. Then we moved onto a more general discussion about what has changed post indyref, and, possibly more importantly, what hasn't changed. Hope you enjoy… LINKS http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/ http://www.allofusfirst.org/ https://tw...

Scottish Referendum - a socialist alternative?
The referendum debate has engaged people in the question of what sort of place they want #Scotland to be. Many in favour of independence argue this is Scotland's chance to escape the more market-led reforms favoured by Westminster and instead create a more social democratic state, inspired by places like #Norway and #Sweden. Even if there's a 'No' vote, Scotland has been promised more powers over its own financial affairs - so Beth McLeod now explores whether Scotland is heading for a more leftwing future than England, whatever the outcome of the referendum... #indyref
