นิตยสารไทม์ ฉบับล่าสุดได้ตีพิมพ์บทสัมภาษณ์และขึ้นภาพ ปธน. ไล่ ชิงเต๋อ บนหน้าปก ซึ่งเป็นผู้นำคนที่ ๓ ของโลกในปีนี้ที่นิตยสารไทม์ ได้นำขึ้นภาพหน้าปกพร้อมบทสัมภาษณ์พิเศษ ต่อจากประธานาธบิดี ปธน. โจ ไบเดน และ นรม. เศรษฐา ทวีสิน ของไทย โดยพาดหัวข่าวใต้ภาพว่า “The Taiwan Test” “AS TENSION WITH BEIJING RISE , THE ISLAND’S NEW PRESIDENT LAI CHING-TE STANDS HIS GROUND” โดยประธานาธิบดีไล่ชิงเต๋อ ได้ชี้แจงสุนทรพจน์ที่จีนอ้างเป็นเหตุในการซ้อมรบรอบไต้หวันในช่วงการสาบานตนรับตำแหน่งผู้นำไต้หวันได้เพียง 3 วัน ว่า คำว่า “สาธารณรัฐจีนกับสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนไม่ขึ้นต่อกัน” ที่ผ่านมาไม่ว่าจะเป็นอดีตประธานาธิบดีหม่าอิงจิ่วหรืออดีตประธานาธิบดีไช่อิงเหวิน ก็เคยใช้มาแล้ว เพราะฉะนั้นจึงไม่ได้เป็นการยั่วยุใด ๆ ทั้งสิ้น” รวมทั้งเป็นสุนทรพจน์ที่สอดคล้องกับรัฐธรรมนูญไต้หวันได้ระบุไว้ นอกจากนี้ ปธน. ไล่ฯ ยังเรียกร้องให้ ปธน. สี จิ้นผิงของจีน ร่วมกันรับผิดชอบต่อสันติภาพบนช่องแคบไต้หวัน
ผู้สื่อข่าวได้ถามถึงกรณีที่หลังชนะเลือกตั้งเพียงวันเดียว นาอูรูก็ได้ประกาศยุติความสัมพันธ์กับไต้หวัน หันไปรับรองปักกิ่งว่า วิตกหรือไม่เกี่ยวกับจำนวนตัวเลขประเทศที่มีความสัมพันธ์อย่างเป็นทางการกับไต้หวันลดลงอย่างต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งผู้นำไต้หวันได้ย้ำว่า หากพันธมิตรของไต้หวันเลือกที่จะไปมีความสัมพันธ์กับ “สาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน” เราก็ได้แต่อวยพรให้โชคดี ส่วนพฤติกรรมของสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนเช่นนี้ ไม่เพียงแต่จะไม่กระทบต่อการมีบทบาทในการเป็น “ประภาคารแห่งเสรีภาพ และป้อมปราการประชาธิปไตย” ของไต้หวันได้ “ผมไม่รู้สึกวิตกกังวลแต่อย่างใด”
อย่างไรก็ดี นายเซียว สวี้เฉิน ผอ. สนง. อดีต ปธน. หม่า อิงจิ่ว ได้ตอบโต้ว่า เป็นการเล่นคำเพื่อหลอกสื่อต่างชาติ เพราะคำว่า “สองฝั่ง” กับ “สองประเทศ” แตกต่างกันโดยสิ้นเชิง หากกล่าวว่า “สองฝั่งไม่ขึ้นต่อกัน” หมายความว่า “เขตไต้หวันกับเขตจีนแผ่นดินใหญ่ยังคงอยู่ในกรอบประเทศจีนเดียวกัน” ส่วน “สาธารณรัฐจีนกับสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน” หมายถึงสองประเทศ ซึ่งก็คือ “ทฤษฎีสองประเทศ” นั่นเอง
ในตอนท้ายของการสัมภาษณ์ ผู้นำไต้หวันได้ย้ำว่า “ประเทศจีนที่มีความมั่นคง จะทำให้ไต้หวันมีความปลอดภัย ไต้หวันที่มีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองก็จะสามารถนำพาให้จีนก้าวหน้าได้ ตนไม่อยากเห็นเศรษฐกิจถดถอย สังคมวุ่นวาย ความสัมพันธ์ทางเศรษฐกิจและการค้าระหว่างไต้หวันกับจีน ความจริงแล้วเป็นผลพวงจากการจัดสรรแบ่งงานกันของห่วงอุปทานโลกนั่นเอง
