Every now and then you get a chance to sit down with some really cool people. The first time was with Charlie Rodman from Signatory and that was such a treat. Kilchoman's Machir Bay Collaborative Vatting
I was able to get my hands on a collaborative vatting done by the Whisk(e)y Soaked Souls and I have to say I had my doubts that there would be a noticeable difference from the standard Machir Bay. I really should know better. It is just enough that it makes the Machir Bay more approachable, dare I say softer? The additional Sherry just brings the right amount of fruit up into the peat that now it feels balanced. It literally made my mouth water, and I am not sure I have ever said that about an Islay Whi...

These two picks from Malloy's finest are a shining example of up and coming Starlight Distillery. They are going to be doing great things in the future I can tell. While the Straight Bourbon is good, the Port Finish knocks it out of the park. Delicious whiskies, on their own, these would also do really well in an Old Fashioned cocktail. Cheers!

Kentucky Peerless
These two expressions from Kentucky Peerless distillery are truly some fine examples of what this craft distillery is capable of. The Double Oak was hard to find when it hit shelves, and for good reason. It is delicious bourbon, hitting all the right notes, especially after warming up the palate a bit. The Distillery exclusive Rye single barrel The Highlander, was also a treat when I bought it at the distillery last fall, a light, floral and highly approachable Rye, this one is an easy sipper! A1 - RWS Old Forester Single Barrel
I was fortunate enough to get my hands on one of these unique picks and I was grateful for Nirav keeping one for me. This bottle had a wonderful nose, but was an intense blend of OF BiB and 1910 I think. It had a lot going on and gave way to an oaky slightly tannic sour note way in the back that perplexed me a bit. Great long finish. These are new, and this one tasted as such. It didn't have the refined quality the previous 90 proof versions had, but I think that is part of the growing pains. This...

Peat, check. Smoke, see Peat, but check. Iodine and brine, yeah. Seaweedy saltiness with a dark chocolate undertone. Sure! Ardbeg Scorch is from some heavily charred ex-bourbon barrels and delivers on an intense smoke that doesn't overpower, but lets you know its there. I enjoy Ardbeg a LOT. Early Times BiB
This bottle for the money is the best kept secret in bourbon. Smooth and utterly approachable this whiskey is one of my favorite go to sippers. Easy to drink, simple to nose and just tasty, it is a super value. Now this new iteration compared to a sample of a 1980 release? More refined than it's older sibling, but the 1980 does bring a bit more heat on the back end and a delightfully peppery finish that I didn't pick up on until after I was done recording. Maker's Mark, 3 out of 4 ain't bad.
So tonight I had my eyes opened by Maker's Mark. Maker's was my "Dad's Bourbon". While it truly was, it wasn't MY favorite, I went the route of single malts instead. But after my trip to Kentucky this year, I bought a little 375 of 46 and thought I found something special. Tonight, however, I had three expressions of Maker's Mark; the Mark, the 46 and the Private Select and I fell in love. Hot Damn! In order, you truly get to enjoy what each has to offer, culminating in the high proof and deliciously complex Select. Well done Maker's Mark. Well done in...

Michter's Kentucky Straight Bourbon
This engineered small batch Bourbon is just the tip of the iceberg for a STRONG Michter's lineup that is truly becoming one of my favorite bourbon distilleries. Mitchter's is consistent across their entire range, but more importantly, there isn't a bad bottle amongst them. The Bourbon is a delectable dram that is the gateway into a new world. Micther's truly is a magical place full of wonder, as in I wonder how they do this? You cannot go wrong with any of their expressions. Cheers!

6 bottle discussion from Buffalo Trace
Had a lovely tasting with some family on Monday, and we enjoyed 6 expressions from Buffalo Trace Distillery. The Buffalo Trace Bourbon, a store pick of the same. Weller Special Reserve, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor Small Batch and finally Blanton's. It was a fun way to enjoy a group of offerings that shared a similar profile yet each had a uniqueness all their own. Side note, it was SavWay not SavMore that every now and then has a display of rare bottles that are inflated over retail.

Springbank 15
This popular Campbeltown distillery has been turning out solid offerings for such a long time, and the 15 year is no exception. A very easy drinking unpeated whisky. I recommend this to anyone looking for a wonderful bottle to add to their shelf. This will not be a bottle of overly complex flavors, no, it is simpler. This is one you will reach for when smoking a light cigar or just wanting a smooth dram to wrap up the night. Sláinte!

Today I quickly discuss 3 expressions from the lovely Ardbeg distillery. The Wee Beastie, Supernova 2015 Committee release and the Limited Edition Kelpie were all delicious and just exemplary Ardbeg expressions. I hope my fellow Ardbeggians had a wonderful day enjoying a delicious dram from this magnificent distillery! Slàinte Mhath!

Fèis Ìle Bunnahabhain 2020. Signatory 12 years Vs. Bunnahabhain 12 year core release
Happy Bunnahabhain day and welcome to a sampling of two 12 year olds. I will tell you that this is like comparing apples and oranges but there are some similarities between the standard core range release 12 year old and the beautiful Signatory Cask Strength Collection 12 year old I purchased from Fine-Drams.com. There is also a special guest appearance from the Travel exclusive Eirigh Na Greine at the end! Slàinte Mhath!

Glen Garioch Virgin Oak
With a little help from my friend John Scuillo the Glen Garioch Virgin Oak was selected for tonights episode. At 48% ABV this bottle was not my favorite when I got it 3 years ago, man how times have changed. This solid offering has a little bit for everyone. If you are looking for a gateway single malt that has some familiar smells and tastes of bourbon then this is your bottle. I was happy to rekindle my interest in this bottle as I hadn't had some in a long time. Great nose, pleasant palate and good finish, this is a fine addit...

Caol Ila 17 Year Unpeated
Tonight's 20th episode is a bit whisky and a bit coming soon. Caol Ila 17 year Unpeated is a solid offering from the Islay distillery and was one of my favorites from my trip there 3 years ago. While not as complex or flavorful as say, a Glenfarclas 105, for a cask strength offering from ex Bourbon barrels, this one has a lot going for it. Sweet and sultry nose, followed by an ever building intense palate that ends in a warm and long finish. If you can still find this, get it. Delicious.

Laphroaig tour 12 and 15 year olds bottled direct from the cask.
Two bottles that were part of the water to whisky tour at Laphroaig that I did back in May of 2017. These are not something everyone can have but they were delicious drams and a pair of wonderful offerings that bridge the age group gap I currently have from 10 to the 16 I own. Perfect for a tasting down the road I think. Cheers to episode 19.

1792 Small Batch vs. Full Proof
It isn't a fair fight but it is a nice comparison between two delicious Bourbon's. Small Batch has a wonderful nose and Finish but I felt it lacked a little in the body. The Full proof is well deserved of its recent World Whisky of the year 2020 win. It is delicious and complex and at 62.5 it ought to be.

Bruichladdich
Set out to have a peat tasting and forgot I had a non-peated sample from Bruichladdich as well so this episode became a tasting of 3 expressions. The Bruichladdich Scottish Barley (0ppm), the Port Charlotte 10 year heavily peated (40ppm), and finally the Octomore 8.2 Masterclass (167ppm). Very much an unrehearsed episode, this was one of discovery as I haven't had Bruichladdich in quite some time. All were delicious but the Octomore was exceptional!

Ardbeg Dark Cove
Not my best episode but this one was about a very special bottle none the less. Dark Cove is a heavily Sherried expression that is definitely Ardbeg. You can taste the distinct undertones at the core of Ardbeg while enjoying a sweeter yet peatier dram. It truly is a special bottle and I have always enjoyed this one.

Talisker Port Ruighe
If you are looking for a bottle of Whisky that isn't available in the US and is every bit worth the effort, I give you Talisker Port Ruighe. Pronounced Port Tree, this bottle is distinctively Talisker but subdued and VERY easy to drink. The Port finish is prevalent and only enhances this Non-age statement core range offering. Bottled at 45.8% you could sip on this all night while curled up by a fire enjoying a wonderful book.

The Tasting
A very much Explicit episode featuring myself and 3 of my dearest friends enjoying a delicious tasting of 11 different Bourbons and being delightfully surprised at the outcome. For a tasting that definitely did not suck it was a wonderful first effort at a blind, multi round, tasting albeit with small plastic cups. Foul language, bodily noises and a lot of laughs. This was such a fun memory that will last a lifetime. Whiskey is a little golden ribbon that ties those of us that love it together. The opinions were terrific and so was the whiskey conve...

The Glenfarclas 105
Fruity candy with a kick from the family owned Speyside distillery. The Glenfarclas 105 was the bottle that single handedly showed me the fun and wildly complex side of whisky. How can a dram be subtly sweet yet overtly complex enough to blow your mind and alter the very reality you live in? Is that alcoholic alchemy? You bet your ass! I absolutely love this bottle and regrettably I do not have any other offerings from Glenfarclas, but this too needs to change. Stay safe and healthy in these uncertain times. Thank you as always for listening.

Mortlach Sherry and American Oak finished 18 year old.
Hey look, a bottle that isn't from Islay!! WHAT?! The Mortlach 18 was a purchase at the duty free in Edinburg and surprisingly enough, is no longer a core range offering. Mortlach is, much like Caol Ila, a distillery that makes more spirits for blenders (Johnny Walker) than having their own ranges. One of the most stunning bottles I own and has become a favorite of mine, which wasn't always the case. Beware the first taste trap! 2.81 distilled, look it up, I had too. It is worth the read. :)
