Between the World and Me Deep Talk
Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me is a non-fiction work exploring the realities of being Black in America. He critiques the American Dream as being built upon the oppression of Black people and examines the psychological and physical toll of racism. Through personal narrative and historical analysis, Coates...

Power Play: How Just 12 People Control America’s Economic Destiny: A conversation with John Coates
In this WhoWhatWhy podcast, I talk with Harvard Law Professor John Coates who discusses his new book, "The Problem of Twelve," which warns against the alarming concentration of financial power in the U.S. Four index funds control 25% of the S&P 500, and along with dominant private equity firms and "too big to fail" banks, they wield outsized influence over the economy and politics. Coates argues that this lack of transparency and extreme concentration of power threatens not just the economy, but U.S. democracy itself. My conversation with John Coates:

More than ever before, advocates are pressuring private-sector companies to take action related to climate impacts. One thing that’s increased the potential effectiveness of these tactics is the tremendous concentration of corporate voting power in the hands of a small number of enormous asset managers. And at the same time, huge, secretive, private equity firms are amassing control of privately held companies, or are taking publicly-traded corporations private. Harvard Law and Economics professor John C. Coates has just released an insightful and thought-provoking book about the dangers and challenges of these investing trends. Episode 24: Baby hearts, inflammation and precarious postdocs
This week we discuss placental inflammation and heart development with postdoc Eleanor Jayne Ward and PI Suchita Nadkarni (@SciSuchita) from Queen Mary, University of London. In this preprint, the authors show that during embryonic heart development, neutrophils (innate immune cells) can sometimes cause placental inflammation. This inflammation leads to a loss of barrier function. In turn, this allows maternal monocytes (innate immune cells that develop into macrophages) to migrate into the embryonic heart. These monocytes alter the tissue resident embryonic macrophages and damage cardiac tissue. This cardiac damage continues postnatally. We discuss this and how limiting placental inflammation was...
