José Rizal, An Unarmed Hero (José Rizal, Un Héroe Sin Armas)
There is a Filipino hero who, despite raising his voice and an entire nation against the Spanish colonizers, is so respected globally that he has his own monument in the center of Madrid, Spain's capital. His name is José Rizal - but what's the story behind this incredible figure, who, unlike Simón Bolívar or José de Martín (among others), never raised his arms against the Spanish and instead led with beautiful words, such as: "Justice is the foremost virtue of the civilizing races. Episode 06: Jose Rizal - To the Flowers of Heidelberg
To the Flowers of Heidelberg is poem of loneliness, longing, and homesickness written by Filipino nationalist José Rizal when he was in Heidelberg, Germany to complete his studies in ophthalmology. He wrote this poem in April 1886, when the winter snow had melted to give way to another glorious spring. Rizal was fascinated by the explosion of flowers in Heidelberg. Yet, among all the blooms competing for attention, he was drawn to the forget-me-not, which reminded him of the equally beautiful flowers in his hometown, Calamba, Laguna. Forget-me-nots were known to fringe the banks of the Neckar River in Heidelberg.

Jose Rizal has left a mark in the hearts of the Filipino throughout history. He had two novels inspired from the life of Filipino's in the times when the Spaniards oppressed Filipino's, these are: Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. He expressed his "Pagkamakabayan" or Patriotism in his writing. He used his words instead of violence in fighting against the Spanish colonizers. He also said "Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan" or "The youth is the hope of the nation", but the real question everyone is saying today, how is the youth the hope of today if they become worse...
