Dr Thomas C. Schmidt on Josephus' Testimonium
My guest today is Dr Thomas C. Schmidt of Fairfield University. Tom has just published an interesting new book through Oxford University Press: Josephus and Jesus – New Evidence for the One Called Christ. In it he makes a detailed case for the authenticity of the Testimonium Flavianum; the much disputed passage about Jesus in Book 18 of Flavius Josephus’ Antiquities of the Jews. Not only does he argue that Josephus wrote about Jesus as this point in his book, but he also argues that the passage we have is substantially what Josephus wrote. This is a distinctive position among scholars, who...

In this second episode they discuss whether Josephus could have known people who were present at Jesus's trial. In the first episode, they tackled the question of whether Josephus's writing about Jesus was edited by Christians to sound more like the biblical account, or whether it could in fact have been written by Josephus (you can catch up on the previous episode wherever you get your podcasts from or w...

The Pillars: Jerusalem, Athens, and the Western Mind
Josephus I: The Jewish Revolt
Josephus’ chronicling the story of the Jewish revolt would reverberate across the next two millennia of Jewish history. On today’s episode, Rabbi Rocklin will address the following questions: How does Josephus justify the Jewish revolt? Why should we take seriously the position of the Sicarii, the most extreme faction during the Jewish revolt, as it pertains to the spirit of the west? According to Josephus’ account, just how Jewish is the martyrdom at Masada? Recommended Reading: Josephus. Complete Works. Translated William Whiston, Grand Rapids Michigan: Kregel Publications, 1960.

Chatting with Chapman: The Winning Edge Playbook
Chatting with Josephus Lyles
In the first episode of "Chatting with Chapman," we sit down with Professional Track athlete Josephus to explore the mental strategies that have fueled his success on the track. From working with sports psychologists at a young age, Josephus learned key techniques like visualization, breath work, and mindfulness, helping him manage pressure and stay grounded. He shares how these mental skills have allowed him to accept failure, maintain perspective, and avoid putting too much pressure on himself—even at the highest levels of competition. Josephus reminds us all of the importance of enjoying the pr...

Kenneth Atkinson, "A History of the Hasmonean State: Josephus and Beyond" (T&T Clark, 2019)
In A History of the Hasmonean State: Josephus and Beyond (T&T Clark, 2019), Kenneth Atkinson tells the exciting story of the nine decades of the Hasmonean rule of Judea (152 - 63 BCE) by going beyond the accounts of the Hasmoneans in Josephus in order to bring together new evidence to reconstruct how the Hasmonean family transformed their kingdom into a state that lasted until the arrival of the Romans.Atkinson reconstructs the relationships between the Hasmonean state and the rulers of the Seleucid and the Ptolemaic Empires, the Itureans, the Nabateans, the Parthians, the Armenians, the Cappadocians, and the...

Name statistics argument 14: Josephus
In principle it would have been barely possible for someone to make use of the works of Josephus to learn about 1st-century Palestinian male name statistics. In this respect the Josephus suggestion by Gregor and Blais passes a very minimal threshhold of possibility, unlike their other suggestions for sources of invented persons, which can't explain anything even aside from their intrinsic improbability. But the Josephus suggestion suffers from severe problems as well. How cumbersome would the process of collecting name statistics from Josephus have been under ancient conditions? Given that none of Gregor and Blais's other suggestions explain anything...

Josephus, James, & Jesus || Interview with Dr. Steve Mason
Today we're talking to historian Dr. Steve Mason who will be sharing his expertise on Josephus, the Jewish historian to the Romans in the 1st Century CE. Josephus has been mined as a source by everyone from Christians arguing for Jesus' divinity to mythicist atheists such as Godless Engineer or Richard Carrier who argue that he never existed. We're going to try to take a broader view. We'll be asking questions like: Who is Josephus? How do historians view him? What is his historical context? Finally, armed with some better context, we'll examine one of the passages...

Apocrypha Test: Part 4: Josephus The Essene, Royal Hasmonean, & Pharisee! In His Own Words!
Down the rabbit hole we go…. The other main alternative thrown out there is that of Josephus. However, why don’t scholars know who Josephus was. How could they claim Qumran was an Essene Canon when Josephus, the Essene, had a different Canon in the same era? How can they not see that Josephus was a Pharisee in his own words? In fact, have they even bothered to read Josephus’ supposed 22-book Canon which actually does not even list the 22 books? They speculate as to which ones and even if they are right, how is it that scholars have not re...

All About Our Pal Josephus
Finally, an episode about Josephus! Josephus is not only our best source for life in Roman-ruled Judaea, but also our only source. (Much like Dave is his parents' favorite, and only, son.) Josephus wrote A LOT about the Jewish wars with Rome and Jewish history in general, but scholars usually take his accounts with a grain of salt. As a Jew and a Roman citizen during a period of great tumult, Josephus had his own version of history to tell. We welcome Helen's colleague Kimberley Czajkowski, an expert on 1st-century Judaea, to introduce us to the real J...

Josephus: The Man Who "Invented" Jewish History
Jewish History Nerds surveyJosephus Flavius is maybe one of the wildest characters in Jewish history, and that's saying something. That's largely because unlike most historians, he didn't just chronicle the story; as Yael tells Schwab in this week's episode, Josephus, or Yosef ben Matityahu, wrote himself into the story - and what a story it is. This week, we learn about Josephus and the siege of Yodfat, and they ask, what does it mean for us to write yourself into the story of Jewish history? This episode was hosted by Jonathan Schwab and Yael...

Vered Noam, "Shifting Images of the Hasmoneans: Second Temple Legends and Their Reception in Josephus and Rabbinic Literature" (Oxford UP, 2018)
The shifting image of the Hasmoneans in the eyes of their contemporaries and later generations is a compelling issue in the history of the Maccabean revolt and the Hasmonean commonwealth. Based on a series of six Jewish folktales from the Second Temple period that describe the Hasmonean dynasty and its history from its legendary founders, through achievement of full sovereignty, to downfall, Vered Noam's Shifting Images of the Hasmoneans: Second Temple Legends and Their Reception in Josephus and Rabbinic Literature (Oxford UP, 2018) examines the Hasmoneans through the lens of reception history. Flavius Josephus Bio: Witness to the Siege of Jerusalem (AD 37-100)
In this episode, Doug explores the life of one of Rome's most important and controversial historians: Flavius Josephus. Josephus started his life in the first century as a brilliant Jewish scholar and Pharisee. He was familiar with the Jewish sects and Roman leaders who opposed Jesus and John the Baptist, and he saw the beginnings of Christianity. He later fought as a general in the war for Jewish independence against Rome up until he was captured. Like Joseph of Egypt, he befriended his captors and soon became a friend and ally to them. An ambitious Roman general, Vespasian, appreciated Josephus...

In this episode, we focus on one of Eisler’s most controversial works, a reconstruction of the 1st-century Roman Jewish historian Josephus’ account of the events surrounding the death of Jesus and the ministry of John the Baptist, including a new physical description of Jesus that apparently prompted the Christ to appear to followers in America to prove he did not look like Eisler said he did. Also, Eisler gets into a bitter back-and-forth with Solomon Zeitlin in the pages of the Jewish Quarterly Review and one Christian scholar dedicates an entire book to discrediting the methods of Eisler and othe...

“The Life:” The Biography of Flavius Josephus
We continue what we began in last week's episode, discussing the historian Flavius Josephus, focusing on his biography, “The Life.” In terms of his future career and authorship, Flavius Josephus could not have arrived in this world at a better time or place. In the year 37—four years after Jesus was crucified—Josephus was born in Jerusalem as Yosef bar Mattathyahu in Aramaic or ben mattathias in Hebrew, the son of a priestly family on both sides. His mother could trace her ancestry to the royal Hasmoneans, the Maccabean family dynasts who had led the struggle for Jewish i...

Theology for the Rest of Us
143: Who is Josephus? Why Does He Matter?
The name “Josephus” is a name that is “thrown around” in many Jewish and Christians circles on a regular basis; but who was this man? And why does he matter to our lives today? In a previous episode, Kenny interviewed Dr. John Morris about extra-Biblical evidences for the resurrection of Jesus, and the primary source mentioned in that episode was the works of Flavius Josephus. In this episode, Kenny gives us a glimpse into the life of this influential man. Josephus was a Jewish religious leader who later became a military commander for the Jewish people in...

Dead Sea: Hot Dry Air: an interview with Flavius Josephus
In this episode of Radio Romanus Publicus’ “Dry, Hot Air,” set in the 90s A.D., host Terry Maxima visits with author Flavius Josephus, one of our most important sources for Jewish history in the Greco-Roman period, especially during the years when the Dead Sea Scrolls were produced. Josephus wrote extensively on the Essenes, whom many scholars associate with the Scrolls and the community at Qumran. In the interview, he describes the relationship of Jews and Judaea to Rome, his own role in the recent rebellion, and how he’s found a place for himself among the court of the Roman em...
