CountermelodyEpisode 135. A Woman’s WinterreiseToday in honor of Women’s History Month and the people of Ukraine, I present a compendium of eight different Liedersängerinnen singing Franz Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise, set to poems by Wilhelm Müller. When I am in despair, I turn to Schubert, who, even in such a bleak piece as Winterreise, offers incomparable insight and empathy into our shared humanity. Though it is often held that this is a cycle that should sung exclusively by men, these eight women put the lie to that faulty premise. Parallax Views w/ J.G. MichaelItaly's Years of Lead and Revolutionary Terrorism w/ Richard Drake
On this edition of Parallax Views, historian Dr. Richard Drake of the University of Montana returns to the program to discuss the new 2nd edition of his book The Revolutionary Mystique and Terrorism in Contemporary Italy. In this conversation we discuss the terrorism, from both the radical left and the radical right, that rocked Italy in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in what has become known as the Years of Lead. Among the topics of discussion are the hyper-fascist Traditionalist philosopher Julius Evola, the Red Brigades, the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, the deeper reasons for the Years...

TRILLOQUYOpus 87 - "Ever Since I Switched Insurance, You"As names like Florence Price and William Grant Still become more familiar to the masses, it's important to also celebrate Black musicians who embrace "classical" music's contemporary aesthetics. Composer Clifton Joey Guidry III joins Garrett to talk about mental health as a young creator, their experiences as a Black, trans bassoonist in contemporary music spaces, and the situation that inspired their composition, "Shut the Fuck Up and Listen". Scott honors John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" and connects it to modern equity initiatives, and Garrett addresses his frustrations with the instrumental choreography performed at Super Bowl LV.

creation podcasts: newsnightNewsnight Podcast 12th January 2007This week, our podcast answers the searing questions: should you stop having milk in your tea? Believe it or not, that’s one for the Classic FM doctor, Rob Hicks. We also ask the FT’s Economics Correspondent why all bar one of the so-called experts in the City failed to predict the latest rise in interest rates. Add to that a bunch of paperbacks, as recommended by our resident bookworm, Chris Powling, and a chat with the distinguished accompanist, Julius Drake, and you have an online listen not to be missed.File Download (17:47 min / 16 MB)
