A Philosophical Look at Madness with guest Justin Garson
Jack interviews Justin Garson, writer, philosopher, and professor, to explore an unsettling and illuminating idea: What if madness isn't just a disorder, but a signal, expressing something deeply out of sync in our lives or society?

98. Does Mental 'Illness' Have a Purpose or Function? Madness as an Adaptive Strategy with Justin Garson
“I wish somebody had presented these ideas that what we call mental disorders, they're not like diabetes. They're not like cancer. They're more like fever or pain. They're meaningful responses to something going on in your life. And they are part of your inner self trying to tell you to look more closely.” - Justin Garson If you’ve ever felt as though there may be a purpose or function to the experiences that get labeled as a ‘mental illness’, you’re not alone. Justin Garson spent his career advocating for the idea that madness should not be seen as p...

162. A Method To The Madness? Mental Illness From Disorder to Design w/ Justin Garson
Justin Garson, professor of philosophy at Hunter College and the Graduate Center City University of New York and author of "Madness: A Philosophical Exploration," has emerged as one of psychiatry's most compelling critics. In this explosive episode, he challenges everything we've been told about mental illness, revealing why depression, ADHD, and even schizophrenia aren't brain diseases – they're adaptive responses that may have kept our ancestors alive. From his father's struggle with schizophrenia in the Nixon era to his own teenage experience with depression, Garson exposes how the "broken brain" narrative has robbed us of agency, created dependency on psychiatric dr...

The London Lecture Series
Beyond Psychiatry: Rethinking Madness Outside Medicine; Presented by Justin Garson
Since the 1970s, psychiatry has been in the grip of a paradigm I call ‘madness-as-dysfunction’. In this view, mental disorders happen when something inside the person isn’t working as it should, or is ‘broken.’ In his previous work, Justin Garson has identified an alternate paradigm, which he calls ‘madness-as-strategy,’ which sees mental illness in terms of purpose, adaptation and function. In this lecture, Justin contrasts these frameworks and outlines their implications for research, treatment and stigma.Part of the London Lecture Series 2023-24 | “Madness and Mental Health"

#17 - Cryptopsy - None So Vile
By 1996 death metal started to become stale and stagnant, with a wave of copycats looking to replicate the success of the genre’s heavyweights. As we’ve covered in previous episodes, extreme music had flirted with the major label world, but did not quite achieve the lofty expectations that were unfairly placed on its gore obsessed shoulders. A return to the underground was the (left hand) path needed and it led to the Great White North. After unleashing their more traditionally-minded demo and full-length debut, Montreal’s Cryptopsy welcomed new additions to their lineup that not only sparked a change...

Transmissions :: Andy Zax on Mort Garson's Journey to the Moon
Welcome back to another episode of Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, so glad to have you with us. A major inspiration for us in the podcast zone is media theorist Douglas Rushkoff, host of the Team Human podcast. As our digital age gets stranger, more fractured, and harder to parse, we find his humanist, consciousness-centered approach very helpful. One of the things he’s known for saying is “Look for the others”—the others who grok your worldview, whose enthusiasms and obsessions mirror your own. And no doubt about it, our guest this week, Andy Zax, feels very much like one of the othe...

Transmissions :: Gia Margaret
It's the thick of the summer, which means your Transmissions correspondents are spending as much time in cool dark spaces as possible. One record that particularly suits the mood in our summer bunker hideaway is Gia Margaret's Romantic Piano. Though Margaret's 2018 debut, There’s Always Glimmer, was the striking work of a singer/songwriter, when medical issues put a strain on her voice, she turned to instrumental music, first with her ambient leaning self-titled 2020 album, and now Romantic Piano, a collection of moving piano compositions, mostly instrumental, that feels at once meditative and comforting. It’s the kind of musi...

#12 - Magrudergrind - Magrudergrind
2009 stands as a pivotal year for aggressive music in the early part of this century with landmark releases from Cattle Decapitation, Converge, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Mastodon. Simultaneously, a three-piece from Washington D.C. stands out amongst these. With a handful of releases under their belt, the abrasive Magrudergrind rose up from the underground with their sophomore album: a perfect blend of grindcore, crust, pop culture references, and hip hop into 27 minutes of pure adrenaline. This week on Riff Worship, Austin & Dylan are rejoined by their longtime friend Justin Swindle to discuss the self-titled Magrudergrind album!Recommendations:...

back from the borderline
completely transform the way you view your mental health symptoms with this reframe
When psychological suffering enters our lives, the modern psychiatric response is often to label, diagnose, and medicate what’s perceived as “symptoms” of conditions like BPD, EUPD, cPTSD, ADHD, ASD, and countless others. The DSM-5, as of 2022, lists criteria for 193 mental health disorders—a number that seems to expand with every edition. This episode challenges Western psychiatry's tendency to pathologize and medicalize human emotional distress, exploring what might happen if we viewed our symptoms not as problems to be "fixed," but as adaptive responses that reveal unmet needs and deeper truths about ourselves.Imagine seeing these intense...

back from the borderline
from disorder to design: flipping the script on "mental health symptoms" with philosopher justin garson
If you no longer viewed your symptoms as proof of being “disordered” but as a part of your brain’s natural, adaptive design, how would that reshape your self-understanding? How would it impact the hope you hold for your future? For millions, the prevailing belief is that symptoms of mental distress stem from chemical imbalances or genetic flaws—issues inherited and hardwired. But groundbreaking research by Dr. Joanna Moncrieff is challenging this very foundation, shaking up the psychiatric field and prompting us to question: What if our brains are simply doing their best to keep us safe?In tod...

Justin Garson, "What Biological Functions are and Why They Matter" (Cambridge UP, 2019)
Why do zebras have stripes? One way to answer that question is ask what function stripes play in the lives of zebras – for example, to deter disease-carrying flies from biting them. This notion of a function plays a central role in biology: biologists frequently refer to the functions of many traits of evolved organisms. But not everything a trait causes is its function – the stripes might disorient some harmless birds, but that isn’t their function. So what determines the function of a trait? And what sort of explanations are offered when biologists claim that a trait has a partic...
