Suicide prevention advocates converged on the Colorado State Capital this week. State and national organizations, as well as volunteers, met with lawmakers to ask for three actions from the General Assembly, including a funding request designed to alleviate Colorado’s high rates of suicide, especially among youth. Hospital Opens New Senior Care Center
Gunnison Valley Health (GVH) held a ribbon cutting ceremony recently to celebrate the opening of their new residential Senior Care Center located in Gunnison’s West End next door to the hospital’s Assisted Living Center. Shortly after the ribbon was cut, 43 residents moved into their new homes. The 52,00 square foot facility cost $23 million to build, none of which came from tax-payers. It’s broken into three neighborhoods, one of which is designated for memory care patients. An Interview with the New County Commissioner Roland Mason
Roland Mason will take office on January 8 as the new District 3 Commissioner in Gunnison County. A lifelong resident of Crested Butte, he recently sat down with KBUT to discuss the future of the region both economically and culturally. For Mason, it all comes back to housing. Mason supported Ballot Initiative 6A, which would have levied taxes earmarked for affordable housing projects by the Gunnison Valley Regional Housing Authority. He says it’s failure has to do with a housing plan that wasn’t finished before the election.

Western to Launch New School with Historic Donation

On August 5, 2015, the toxic secrets of the Gold King Mine spilled forth. Crews accidentally breached a plug holding back mine wastes. Within hours, three million gallons of heavy metals-laden wastewater spilled into area watersheds and through downstream towns and farms. Author Jonathan Thompson has written a book, "River of Lost Souls," that documents what became one of Colorado's worst environmental disasters.
