מדברים שליחותפרק 26: שליחות לקנזס סיטי, ארה"ב – ראיון עם אופיר הכהןאופיר שימשה כשליחה בקנזס סיטי, ארה"ב בשנת 2012-2013. היא שימשה כשליחה קהילתית מטעם הסוכנות היהודית ועבדה במסגרת הפדרציה המקומית. אופיר כבר הכירה את החיים בארה"ב מאז התגוררה באוקלהומה בילדותה כשאימה שימשה כשליחה ותמיד ידעה שהיא תצא בעצמה לשליחות.
לקראת שליחותה היא החליטה לצאת לשליחות קצרה במחנות הקיץ, דבר שגם עזר לה להכין את עצמה לשליחות הארוכה. אופיר הרגישה שלקח לה זמן עד שהבינה בדיוק מה נדרש ממנה והיא מדגישה עד כמה חשובים ההיכרויות והמפגשים האישיים עם הגורמים המגוונים בקהילה. היא מתארת אירוע שיא של ארגון תערוכת צילומים וסבב הרצאות של צלם ישראלי.
היא מסבירה על ייחודיות השליחות החינוכית לקהילות בחו"ל בשונה למשל משליחות מטעם משרד החוץ, ומגדירה כ"מתנה" את ההזדמנות לצאת לתקופה משמעותית לשליחות ולבחון את עצמך וזהותך. אמנם תמיד הרגישה חיבור לארה"ב בשל הרקע שלה, אך דווקא בשנת השליחות התחזקה בזהותה הישראלית וגם לא ראתה צורך להישאר לשנת שליחות שניה. היא הרגישה שהשליחות השפיעה עליה לא פחות ממה שהיא השפיעה על אחרים, ועיצבה אותה מבחינה יהודית ובהמשך דרכה בחיים. היא מדגישה שחשוב להבין כיצד לדעת 'לתרגם' את המיומנויות והכישורים שרוכשים בשליחות לצורך המשך הדרך המקצועית בארץ.

Everything was taken, including the toiletries provided by the hotel. After telling the police that no one did this to him, he dies.
