Er besucht die Roosevelt High School, singt im Kirchenchor, bringt sich selbst das Gitarrenspiel bei. Anfang der 50er freundet er sich mit Jerry Butler an. Dieser holt den 16-jährigen Curtis in seine eigene Gruppe, die Roosters. 1958 ändert die Gruppe ihren Namen, von da an heißen sie The Impressions, und mit “For your precious love” landen sie einen ersten Hit. Die Impressions erleben Mitte bis Ende der 60er Jahre ihre Blütezeit und landen Hits wie "Keep On Pushing", "People Get Ready", "Choice Of Colours", "This Is My Country" oder "We People Who Are Dark...
