這首〈小刀麥基〉會成為爵士標準曲，實在非比尋常。原曲出自1928年布萊希特Bertolt Brecht和作曲家庫特懷爾Kurt Weill合作的《三便士歌劇》。主角小刀麥基的演員臨時要求一首主題曲，布萊希特給是給了，卻交給劇中的街頭藝人來吟唱麥基劣跡。原先設計手搖風琴伴奏，首演卻故障，還是由樂隊上陣。現在也有很多人用手風琴營造街頭感。我們就經由演音樂劇的能手Ute Lemper來體會原汁原味的德語版。
但這首歌會在美國走紅，卻另有機緣。1954年《三便士歌劇》在紐約外百老匯登場，小號手兼歌手「書包嘴」Louis Armstrong次年旋即翻唱，一炮而紅。1960年Ella Fitzgerald赴柏林演唱，把英語版帶回柏林，但開口沒兩段就忘詞，只好一面編詞一面Scat，卻把擬聲唱法發揮到極致，現場效果爆采，竟以這個忘詞版本的演唱奪得葛萊美獎，也成為爵士傳奇。
巴黎專演法國經典的法蘭西喜劇院Comédie-Française破天荒在2023年推出《三便士歌劇》的法語版，邀來德國前衛劇場導演歐斯特麥耶Thomas Ostermeier操刀，「後戲劇」特色十足。由Claïna Clavaron演唱的La complaite de Mac-la Lame竟從清唱開始，迅即發展成張牙舞爪的情緒起伏，令人瞠目結舌。
敘事歌謠有可能讓器樂一展所長？不妨聽聽抒情薩克斯風巨匠Ben Webster 1965年在丹麥的錄音，示範如何將這首歌變成標準曲：主旋律一遍演完就開始接連即興，Kenny Drew漂亮的鋼琴音色、NHØP的靈活貝斯，加上薩克斯和鼓組的丟接對話，無懈可擊。再來聽聽小號大師Clark Terry跟Oscar Peterson三重奏在1964的競奏，以及電風琴大師Jimmy Smith和吉他手Kenny Burrell 1993年在大阪Kirin Plaza的合奏，各家音色迥異的狂放咆哮，激發出這首曲子的暗黑能量。
