ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
Ο Οδυσσέας και οι σύντροφοί του, φεύγοντας από τον Άδη, επιστρέφουν στο νησί της Κίρκης, την Αία. Η Κίρκη τους δίνει πληροφορίες για τους κινδύνους που θα αντιμετωπίσουν κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού τους. Τους λέει πως θα φτάσουν πρώτα στις Σειρήνες, γι’ αυτό και δίνει στον Οδυσσέα κερί για να βουλώσει τα αφτιά των συντρόφων του και τον συμβουλεύει να δεθεί σφιχτά με σχοινιά, αποφεύγοντας το θανατηφόρο τραγούδι τους. Κατόπιν θα πρέπει να περάσουν μέσα από δύο κατακόρυφους αντικριστούς βράχους, τις Πλαγκτές Πέτρες, όπου ζουν η Σκύλλα και η Χάρυβδη. Τέλος, θα φτάσουν στο νησί της Θρινακίας, εκεί όπου βόσκουν τα ιερά βόδια του θεού Ήλιου.
Αναχωρούν λοιπόν από το νησί της Κίρκης και καταφέρνουν να προσπεράσουν τις Σειρήνες, με τον Οδυσσέα, δεμένο στο κατάρτι, να ακούει τη μαγευτική φωνή τους. Καταφέρνουν να αποφύγουν τις Πλαγκτές Πέτρες και πλέουν κοντύτερα στο βράχο της Σκύλλας, για να γλιτώσουν απ’ το στόμα της Χάρυβδης. Όμως η Σκύλλα καταφέρνει να αρπάξει έξι συντρόφους του και να τους καταβροχθίσει. Έπειτα φτάνουν στο νησί του Ηλίου. Ο Οδυσσέας, έχοντας στο νου του τις προφητείες του μάντη Τειρεσία, ζητά από τους συντρόφους του να πάρουν όρκο να μην κυνηγήσουν τα βόδια του θεού. Νοτιάς κράτησε στο νησί σχεδόν ένα μήνα και τα τρόφιμά τους τελείωσαν. Όσο ο Οδυσσέας απουσιάζει για να προσευχηθεί, ο Ευρύλοχος παρακινεί τους υπόλοιπους να σπάσουν τον όρκο τους και να σφάξουν τα βόδια του Ήλιου. Ο Δίας κεραυνοβολεί το καράβι τους, όταν σαλπάρουν και πάλι, και τους καταποντίζει. Μόνο ο Οδυσσέας καταφέρνει να σωθεί πάνω σε ένα καραβόξυλο και να φτάσει στο νησί της Καλυψώς.
