"Trust" (1990) is about a pregnant 17-year-old who gets together with a so-called dangerous man after they're both kicked out of their respective homes. "Simple Men" (1992) storyline has two brothers searching for their anarchist father after he escapes from jail. Next show:  B movies with  "The Little Shop of Horrors" (1960) and "Repo Man" (1984).Have your own recommendations? Many people consider "8 1/2" (1963) to be  Fellini's masterpiece. A movie director tries to figure out  his next project. What's a dream? What's real? Sometimes were not sure. "Black Bear" (2020)  stars Aubrey Plaza as woman film maker trying break her creative roadblock. The first thirty minutes of the film is a little slow, but the last hour is so good, that it makes the first part so much better. Definitely worth checking out.Next up, Matt introduces Adam to indie director Hal Hartley with "Trust" (1990) & "Simple Men...2024-05-2257 minTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam149: Z (1969) and The Parallax View (1974)Text Matt & Adam!Back from their internships at the Parallax Corporation, Matt and Adam have a couple paranoia thrillers this week. Z (1969) is the realistic portrayal of a progressive politician who ends on the wrong end of a club. Fascism, mob violence, a political cover-up? That would never happen today.... In The Parallax View (1974), we meet a mysterious corporation up to no good (29:30). Warren Beatty does his best, but we just don't like him. Have your own recommendations? They disagree about the point of "In the Mood for Love", but  agree its worth a watch. "Past Lives" is a much hyped yet intimate film asking the question "Can you return to your younger self (and lost love)?" The answer might surprise you. Next show - who knows? We're going on hiatus for a few weeks while Matt enjoys the Florida sun. Have your own recommendations? David Mamet's "Things Change" (1988) is the story of an old Italian shoe shiner who's agreed to take the fall for a murder, but then is mistaken for a Mafia boss. Matt loves this film and Adam liked it but thought it could have been better. "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999) is one of those under-appreciated movies that M&A feel has so much going for it, it should be seen by everyone. They both agree Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the film with less than 10 minutes screen time. A must...2022-09-231h 02Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam127: High Noon (1952) and Three O'Clock High (1987)Text Matt & Adam!Showdown is the theme. "High Noon" (1952) is one of the best/most famous westerns of all time. Gary Cooper won an Oscar for his portrayal of Marshall Will Kane, but that is not the only thing going for it. The script is progressive and way ahead of its' time.  John Wayne called it the un-American, which made the boys love it more. Adam felt "Three O'Clock High" (1987) was way ahead of its time with the director using techniques that made the film look 90's. Next, mistaken identity with David Mamet's "Things Change" (1988) an...2022-09-071h 01Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam125: The Secret of My Success (1987) and The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)Text Matt & Adam! From the mailroom to the boardroom is the theme this week. Michael J. Fox's "The Secret of My Success" (1987) was a film young Adam liked and  still does. Matt thinks it needs a little recasting and definitely a new soundtrack. "The Hudsucker Proxy" (1994) was a  box office disaster for the Coen Brothers, but they followed it up with "Fargo". An homage to 50's romantic comedies, Matt was bored and thought it a little over the top, which was what Adam really liked about it. Both would have recast the Paul Newman role. No...2022-08-0351 minTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam124: Harvey (1950) and Donnie Darko (2001)Text Matt & Adam!We took listener advice and watched "Harvey" (1950). So, this week's theme is giant invisible rabbits. Jimmy Stewart plays the amiable Elwood P Dowd, a man whose best friend is a 6 foot three- and one-half tall rabbit only he can see. Or perhaps not. Matt loves this film for its sweetness, but Adam was bothered by the shrillness  of a character. "Donnie Darko" (2001) is also a story about a large invisible rabbit, but one that is a little more malevolent. Or perhaps not. Jake Gyllenhaal crushes it as title character in this dark but brilliant f...2022-07-211h 11Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam120: Michael Clayton (2007) and Killing Them Softly (2012)Text Matt & Adam! The theme for this week is fixers. "Michael Clayton" (2007), stars George Clooney as a bag man for a huge law firm that is representing a Monsanto-like company. The lead attorney on the case has a mental breakdown and Clooney has to clean it up. Matt and Adam  wanted more Clooney fixing. Brad Pitt is a different kind of fixer in "Killing Them Softly" (2012), a film centered around the aftermath of a poker game robbery. Next, failed comedians is the theme with "King of Comedy" (1982) and "Joker" (2019).Thanks for listening!...2022-06-2256 minTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam119: Rhubarb (1951) and The Stoned Age (1994)Text Matt & Adam!"I love this stupid movie" is this week's theme. "Rhubarb" (1951) is the story about a cat who inherits a major league baseball team. Definitely a little stupid, but also very funny. Rhubarb is played by Orangey, a cat that with 30 acting credits to his name and the only animal to be named winner of the prestigious Patsy Awards (animal Oscar) twice. "The Stoned Age" (1994) is one night in the life of a couple high school stoners looking for something to do on a Friday night. Matt liked it more than he thought he would...2022-06-0758 minTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam118: The Getaway (1972) and Midnight Special (2016)Text Matt & Adam!On the lam is the theme for this week. Sam Peckinpah's "The Getaway" (1972) is based on the pulp novel written by Jim Thompson and stars Steve McQueen. With all that going for it, you'd think it would be a really good film, but it's just not. It's not bad but could have been better with a recast of the two leads. "Midnight Special" (2016) is the opposite as Michael Shannon heads a great cast for this pseudo-sci fi thriller. Matt wishes this cast could do a remake of "The Getaway". Definitely underrated. 2022-05-211h 06Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam115: The French Connection (1971) and The Chaser (추격자) (2008)Text Matt & Adam!Cat and mouse films this week. William Friedkin's "The French Connection" (1971) is based on the true exploits of NYPD Detective Popeye Doyle, a street level narcotic agent who engages in a battle of wits with a French heroin smuggler.  Popeye is Matt's favorite Gene Hackman character of his film career. From South Korea. "The Chaser" (2008) is about an ex-cop turned pimp, whose girls keep disappearing. He sets out to find out why and ends up in a chase for the truth that includes a gruesome serial killer and the most incompetent police force ever. ...2022-04-261h 03Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam111: Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and The Dark Knight (2008)Text Matt & Adam!Oscar fails month continues  with the 2009 Best Director category. Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" is probably the best choice of those nominated. The direction was best when the characters were young  in the slums of Bombay, but it  bogged down in the second half. Christopher Nolan's  "The Dark Knight" is a modern day film noir masterpiece that wasn't  nominated for Best Picture. Matt, comic book movie hater, loved every second of it. Nolan's story telling and visual eye is everything we love  on this show.  Next 2019, Rami Malek wins for "Bohemian Rhapsody...2022-03-241h 03Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam102: Kelly's Heroes (1970) and Three Kings (1999)Text Matt & Adam!Military gold heist is this week's theme. Matt last saw "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) at the drive in as a 16 year old, and was disappointed that it didn't hold up well. "Heroes" started out on a good note, but got bogged down while trying to figure out what kind of movie it wanted to be. "Three Kings" (1999), set during the first Gulf War,  is much more enjoyable. It's fast paced, the characters are fleshed out and it's funny when it needed to be. Above all, it's entertaining. Next M&A are in need a li...2022-01-201h 03Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam101: A Hard Day's Night (1964) and Summer / Leto (Лето )(2018)Text Matt & Adam!On the first episode of the new year, the theme is band movies. "A Hard Day's Night" (1964) was the Beatles hit film that added to the hysteria  surrounding them at the time. Matt loved the soundtrack and the Mop Tops' personalities. Both loved the clean, old man. "Leto" (2018), the show's first Russian film., captures the burgeoning early 80's Leningrad rock scene. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find, but if you do make sure you give it a watch.Up next, military heist movies with "Kelly Hero's" (1970) and "Three Kings" (1999).2022-01-131h 13Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam100: The Godfather (1972) and Rocky IV (1985)Text Matt & Adam! It's the 100th episode, so of course we celebrate Talia Shire! Just kidding - we watched two of the most popular movies one guy hadn't seen. Matt thinks Francis Ford Coppola's "Godfather" (1972) is w a flawless film. Adam had never seen it, but felt like he had already knew the whole story because of so many  cultural references to the film. . The boys thought watching "Rocky IV" (1985) was a very weird experience and not in a good way. Matt hated it and thought Stallone mailed it in.  Adam thinks Sly started out with a 48 pa...2021-12-161h 19Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam99: Other People (2016) and Paddleton (2019)Text Matt & Adam! After Noirvember, we decided to lighten things up a bit with this week's theme:  cancer comedies. In "Other People" (2016)  Jesse Plemons  kills it as a man who returns home to be with his dying mother. The film is worth a look because it has just the right mix of comedy and sadness. "Paddleton" (2019") is the story about two odd friends and how they cope after one of them becomes terminally ill. Ray Romano steals the show with his performance as a man who has to help his only friend to die. Both of these fil...2021-12-091h 01Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam96: A Touch of Evil (1958) and Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)Text Matt & Adam!Noir-vember remains in full swing. Matt thinks Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil" (1958) is the last great film from the original Noir era. Adam liked it, but thought it dragged a little in the middle. Both M&A think it's worth seeing just for the opening and final scenes. "Bad Times at the El Royale" (2018) is a film about a mysterious hotel where no one is who they say they are. Adam loved it, but liked it more after talking about it on the show. Next, we go international noir with John Woo's, "H...2021-11-171h 10Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam95: The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) and The Merry Gentleman (2008)Text Matt & Adam!On the latest Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam, Noir-vember continues with one masterpiece and one piece of god awful. Matt and Adam loved John Cassavete's "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie" (1976) so much, they both consider it a masterpiece. It's unique, refreshing and never boring. Ben Gazzara was born to play Cosmo Vittelli. Did I mention how good it is? Check it out if you can find it. Michael Keaton's directorial debut, "The Merry Gentleman" (2008) is terrible and no one should see it.Next, Noir-vember moves onward with...2021-11-101h 09Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam93: The Haunting (1963) and Suspiria (1977)Text Matt & Adam!In honor of Halloween, the theme for this week is horror. "The Haunting" (1963) is a film about a creepy old house that may or may not be a living entity (1:52). No ghosts or gore, but plenty of psychological terror for those who dare spend the night. Based on Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House". "Suspiria" (1977) comes from Italy and is a pure mess but has enough uniqueness to keep one's interest (33:40). It's not every day you see death by a room full of razor wire. Both Matt and Adam thought the director saved...2021-10-291h 08Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam92: Blackboard Jungle (1955) and Detachment (2011)Text Matt & Adam!Bad Schools is this weeks theme. "Blackboard Jungle" (1955) is the story about a first year teacher in an inner city, all boys school (1:48). The guys both liked it a lot and thought it held up well after 66 years. In "Detachment" (2011), the teacher is a long term substitute and he encounters many of the same problems we saw in Blackboard Jungle (38:36). Matt thought it may have had too many side stories, which caused it to drag a little the second half, but he and Adam both think it deserves a look. As a former teacher...2021-10-211h 12Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam91: Yojimbo (用心棒) (1961) and Sholay (1975)Text Matt & Adam!Actually, this is really a western is this weeks theme. Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (1961), is the film Sergio Leone based "For a Few Dollars More"  on. M & A both liked it, but Adam thought it dragged a little. It also lacked the signature Kurosawa shots that are so common in his films. "Sholay" (1975) is the show's first film from India and is considered a benchmark of Indian cinema, but the boys weren't prepared for a 3 + hour film that had every genre thrown in except horror and sci-fi. Both guys used the fast forward button a lot. T...2021-10-171h 00Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam90: In Cold Blood (1967) and Alpha Dog (2006)Text Matt & Adam!#TrueCrime is this weeks theme. Truman Capote's book "In Cold Blood", caused quite a stir back in the 60's and the movie (1967) is a really good adaptation. Robert Blake is great as Perry, as he somehow makes us feel sympathy for killer who actually pulled the trigger. Nick Cassavete's "Alpha Dog" (2006) is the horrendous true story about bad parenting, stupid people and the needless death of a fifteen year old young man. Matt didn't like it very much, but Adam thought it is worth a view.Next, Actually, it's a...2021-10-121h 15Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam89: Croupier (1998) and Molly's Game (2017)Text Matt & Adam!Gambling is the theme this episode. Croupier (1998), stars Clive Owen as an aspiring writer who takes a job in a casino. Flashes of noir with an indie vibe. Both Matt and Adam thought it was a mixed bag and neither could figure out the film's most important scene. Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut, Molly's Game (2017), is based on a true story about an ex-world class athlete who runs high stake poker games in Los Angeles and New York City. Idris Elba is at his best as Molly's high priced attorney. Also, we learned Toby Maguire...2021-10-031h 10Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam86: The In-laws (1979) and Gotcha! (1985)Text Matt & Adam! This week's theme is Accidental Espionage with a good and bad example of this sub-genre of the buddy/road movie. The In-Laws (1979) is a showcase for the two main stars - Peter Falk and Alan Alda. After a brief salute to the greatness of James Hong, Matt and Adam explain why it felt like a complete movie. Gotcha! (1985) has good bones, but a lot of flaws. The guys discuss what few things worked and how to fix it. Next week, Good Cop with Serpico (1973) and Veteran (베테랑) (2015).Thanks for listening!Did w...2021-09-031h 08Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam85: Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989) and Closer (2004)Text Matt & Adam! The theme  this week is Relationships are........complicated, but it very well could have been "everybody lies". Steven Soderbergh's directorial debut "Sex, Lies and Videotapes", (1989) caused quite a stir on the film festival circuit and M&A agree it still holds up. James Spader is creepy good. Matt had never heard of Mike Nichol's film "Closer" (2004), and was blown away after viewing. Adam thought Clive Owen stole the show the last thirty minutes of the movie.#btv #burlingtonvermont #vermont #madeinvermont #soderbergh #juliaroberts #cliveowen, #udelaw #natalieportmanNext, mistaken secret agents with The I...2021-08-271h 08Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam83: Better Off Dead (1985) and Punch Drunk Love (2002)Text Matt & Adam!Lovable Losers is this weeks theme.  "Better Off Dead" (1985) is a favorite of Adam's childhood, but a very disappointed Matt gave one of his worst reviews. Adam Sandler does his Adam Sandler thing in P.T. Anderson's odd romantic comedy, "Punch Drunk Love" (2002), but with a better script and director. While both M&A liked it, they questioned the romance. Next, First time directors with Terence Malick's "Badlands" (1973) and Christopher Nolan's "Following" (1998).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Both Matt and Adam found "Delicatessen" (1991) to be a zany, worthwhile trip into the world of circus clowns, butchers, cellists, troglodytes and terrible buildings. "High-Rise" (2015) is a film Matt loved, hated and found indifferent, but he thought about it often after watching. Not for your average film goer.Next, Lovable Losers with "Better Off Dead" (1985) and "Punch Drunk Love" (2002).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) is a classic Paul Newman film about a lovable ne'er do well's life in a Florida chain gang prison that Adam loved from the opening scene. "Luke" lost to "In the Heat of the Night" for Best Picture, and both M&A think it was a travesty of justice. "Bronson" (2008) is the story of Charles Bronson, Britain's most famous and violent prisoner. Matt thought there wasn't enough back story and the violence was a little repetitious, but thinks the uniqueness of the screenplay and Tom H...2021-07-231h 10Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam79: If.... (1968) and Bananas (1971)Text Matt & Adam!Revolution is in the air. Matt had never heard of the British film "If...." (1968) until Adam had him watch it. He loved it. A young Malcom McDowell stars as the lead "revolutionary" in an all boys prep school as he and a couple friends decide that school should be out, permanently. "If" is refreshingly unique and a little weird. Check it out. Woody Allen's "Bananas" (1971) was one of Matt's favorite films from high school, but now he thinks it doesn't hold up well. Adam thought it was a bit uneven. (PSA: Woody Allen is...2021-07-161h 03Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam78: 1776 (1972) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989)Text Matt & Adam! It's Patriotic films this week. Adam has one question, "Is one of these really a patriotic movie?". "1776" (1:35)  definitely fits into that category. A retelling of the month leading up the Declaration of Independence. Both Matt and Adam liked the dialog, but felt most of the songs were less than memorable. "Born on the Fourth of July" (31:56) was the second of Oliver Stone's Viet Nam Trilogy and it does not disappoint. Adam liked it more than Matt (Platoon fan), but both felt it was a "tour de force" for lead actor Tom Cruse. #patrioticmovies #patriotism #U...2021-07-101h 16Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam75: Trainspotting (1996) and American Pie (1999)Text Matt & Adam!Adam gives Matt two important films from the 90's this week.  It's unbelievable that Matt had never seen "Trainspotting" (1996), but after watching it, he agrees with Adam that it's a minor masterpiece. Matt admits that 18 year old Matt may have liked "American Pie" (1999), but 65 year old Matt did not. Adam enjoyed this film of his youth and knew several of the characters in his world. Both agreed Eugene Levy is in the best scenes.  #trainspotting #irvinewelsh #americanpie #eugenelevy #90s #90skids #90smovies #madeinvermont #vermonter #vermontermadeNext, Growing up in Crime. Peter Bogdanovich's "The Last Picture Show" (1971), filmed in black and white, is the story about a dying Texas town in the early fifties. Both M&A thought it was original, well written and a must view.  Peter Sellers last good film "Being There" (1979), directed by the great Hal Ashby, was a labor of love. Sellers tried throughout the 70's to get made. Adam like it, but didn't love it as much as Matt (one of his favorites), as he thought it was a little s...2021-06-101h 14Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam73: Bull Durham (1988) and Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)Text Matt & Adam!Minor League/College Baseball is the theme for this week. "Bull Durham" (1987)  was Kevin Costner's first of his three 80s-90s baseball movies (Field of Dreams, For Love of the Game). Matt, a baseball fanatic, liked it more than Adam, who thought there was too much baseball and not enough of the Costner, Robbins and Sarandon dynamic. "Everybody Wants Some!!" (2016) is a Richard Linklater vehicle about three days before class starts for a college baseball team. Similar to "Dazed and Confused", but not as memorable. The relationship of the players is the centerpiece of t...2021-06-061h 04Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam72: Barfly (1987) and Another Round (2020)Text Matt & Adam!"Drinking" is this weeks theme and we have two good ones. Writer Charles Bukowski's "Barfly" (1987) is beautifully written trip into the grimy underworld of LA dive bars. Both Matt and Adam loved the dialogue, but neither could figure out where Mickey Rourke's accent was from. Denmark's "Another Round" (2020) is about four high school teachers who test a theory that they would all be better educators and men if they drank a little throughout the day. What teacher hasn't wanted to do that? The depiction of the relationship between the four was a solid centerpiece...2021-05-271h 11Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam71: Slacker (1990) and Short Cuts (1993)Text Matt & Adam!"Vignettes" is the theme for the latest episode. First up, Richard Linklater's, "Slacker" (1990), a film in which the camera follows different people around Austin and captures moments in their lives. Adam thought it was able capture the early nineties. Matt liked it, but it's not that memorable. Robert Altman's "Short Cuts" (1993) is based on Raymond Carver short stories, but Adam felt the the stories are much better/darker than the film. Matt thought it was too long and had too many actors who weren't able to work well in Altman's improvising style....2021-05-2152 minTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam70: The Killers (1964) and The Thing (1982)Text Matt & Adam!"Good Remakes" is this week's theme for Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam. "The Killers" (1964) is a remake of a 1946 film by the same name. It's not as good as the original, but is worth a look as both M&A thought Angie Dickinson stole the show. John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) is a much better version of 1951's "The Thing from Another World". Matt had never seen it, and was surprised how much he liked it. Next up "Movies with Vignettes", as we watch Richard Linklater's "Slacker" (1990) and Robert Altman's "Short...2021-05-131h 09Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam68: The Deer Hunter (1978) and Cherry (2021)Text Matt & Adam! This week's theme is Before/After War. Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" (1978) is the story of friends from a steel town in Pennsylvania who join the army near the end of the VietNam War. Matt and Adam both found the story convoluted and unrealistic, but both felt the strength the general theme and great acting make it worthwhile. Beware, it is over three hours long. "Cherry" (2021) is about a young man who's going nowhere, so he joins the army at the beginning of the second Iraq war. We liked it more than most critics...2021-04-281h 05Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam67: Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004) and Inherent Vice (2014)Text Matt & Adam!In honor of the national holiday 4/20, Stoner Movies is this week's theme.  "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" (2004) is about as "Stoner" as you get and didn't disappoint. Matt found it funnier than he thought it would be and Adam enjoyed it more on his second viewing. Both thought Neil Patrick Harris stole the show. "Inherent Vice" (2014) felt like director Paul Thomas Anderson was stoned when he wrote the adaptation for Thomas Pynchon's novel, because it was an incoherent mess that didn't work on so many levels. "Thoroughbreds" (2017) is about two young women who decide that a step-father needs to go. Both M&A found the acting and story on the plus side, but the movie seemed flat and unemotional. Not a lot of laughs. "The Death of Dick Long" (2019) is just as good in the acting and story departments, but sardonically funny. Matt liked Billy Wilder's "Double Indemnity" (1944) more than Adam, but they both felt the casting of the two main characters (Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck) was wrong. They were in agreement that costar Edward G. Robinson stole the show. "Detour" (1945) cost pennies to make and supposedly shot in 5 days, but M&A agree that it's a can't miss little gem of a film. We wander through the New (old) West with Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas (1984). His hyper-focused tale of one man's struggle with what it means to be a father has a lot to say about how hard it is to actually care about another person. Tokyo Sonata (2008) gives us a quiet (but never boring) look inside gender roles, family dynamics and shame in Japanese culture. Matt is troubled by abusive police; Adam is impressed by how many people read.  Next week we head back in time for 2021-03-311h 26Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam63: Wings of Desire (1987) and Dogma (1999)Text Matt & Adam!Angels on Earth is the theme this week. Wim Wender's "Wings of Desire" is one of Matt's favorite films and Adam seemed to enjoy it too. Both agreed it was more like watching poetry than film. Kevin Smith's "Dogma" wasn't as good as 18 year old Adam once thought, but it has its moments. Matt Damon rocks as the avenging angel Loki. Unintentionally, both movies were about writers working it out in swimming pools. Adam and Matt both agree Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard" is a masterpiece, with Gloria Swanson giving the performance of a lifetime. Love at First Bite has the worst opening 20 minutes of any movie, mostly because of George Hamilton. This "comedy" took a decent premise and never figured out exactly what it was making fun of. Matt has a weird feeling about seeing The Big Chill again. Is it the unlikeable yuppies? The cavalier attitude toward sex/fertilization/adultery? The ending? The fact that this is a movie about people realizing that they do not like each other? Maybe it's all of the above. Lovecraft adaptations. High and Low is a forward thinking crime drama. We dissect it in two parts 1) Stage play 2) precursor to Law & Order. Kurosawa frames the action in each scene with meticulous precision. We have a lot to praise. Somehow we manage not to do a samurai impression (1:35). Sorcerer opens with a bang, or four bangs. Rowdy Roddy Piper does not really meet the moment with his acting, but we love Keith David. Surprisingly, it kept Matt's attention and he has notes for expanding the story. The Nice Guys is just a fun f---ing movie from action flick royalty, Shane Black. Gosling and the guy from Gladiator have unbelievable chemistry. Uncut Gems (35:25) hits a lot of the same notes, and they are played to perfection, but it just wasn't our song. The performances, again, are stellar, but the noise of the movie was distracting and, well, annoying. We expect big things from...2020-06-101h 17Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam19: Night of the Hunter (1955) and Get Out (2017)Text Matt & Adam!Part 2 of Actor-directorial debut week. Night of the Hunter is really a monster movie that features an electrifying performance from Robert Mitchum. Why did Laughton only direct one movie? He had such a great eye for framing scenes. Get Out pays homage to Lovecraft and classic horror with a healthy dose of relevant social commentary. And don't forget the humor brought by our man Rod! Gazebos - don't trust 'em. Have your own recommendations? Robert Redford absolutely knocks it out of the park with one of Matt's favorite movies. Adam thinks it's a weird favorite, but Matt explains why this one touches him so much. Mid 90s is not earth-shattering, but it is a very competent debut from writer/director Jonah Hill. He captures a brief era with love for his subjects that will warm any millennial's heart. Have your own recommendations? Oh wait, the acting...American Graffiti sets the standard for one wild night high school movies. We were annoyed at first, but you eventually love these "kids". A product of the times but also a must-see. Kicking and Screaming is equally annoying, but also endearing. A lot of intellectual discussions about mundane things, which is a look into the future of media. The characters are limited by their own potential to be more than mediocre (while being totally mediocre) -- so 90's. Have your own r...2020-05-281h 16Two for the Road: Movies with Matt and AdamTwo for the Road: Movies with Matt and Adam16: The Verdict (1982) and Find Me Guilty (2006)Text Matt & Adam!We are back in the courtroom with two movies from the pod's favorite director - Sidney Lumet. The Verdict showcases Paul Newman as an actor. I think he's gonna be a star. Find Me Guilty similarly relies on Vin Diesel, and he surprises with an engaging performance (and he doesn't even drive a car into a helicopter). Have your own recommendations? Surprisingly, Matt liked it (after the first few minutes). We both liked its broader message. Tape also gets off to a slow start, but it ultimately delivers with amazing performances, especially from Uma Thurman, and ponders the stories we tell ourselves. Have your own recommendations? We both think 12 Angry Men is still relevant for a variety of reasons. Talk Radio also feels current, but we have some issues with the execution. Have your own recommendations? All about Eve is full of snappy dialogue and great performances. A well-crafted drama about drama people. Lady Bird is funny, full of heart, and offers a realistic depiction of growing up. At the end, Matt briefly reveals his own past as an actor. #Allabouteve #marilynmonroeHave your own recommendations? We talk about bad movies from good directors, but they must have heard us. Matt's mic has an audio problem starting at 16:53. You have to listen closely to hear him, but I swear that he said a bunch of really smart and entertaining stuff.  Have your own recommendations? Despite our nitpicks, it holds up. In The Good, the Bad and the Weird, Matt has found a new favorite. This movie moves quickly, breaks genre norms, but still finds time for a whole lot of humor. Have your own recommendations? Young Billy Bob Thornton is still Billy Bob. Best movie of 1992? That's debatable. Fruitvale Station is full of life until it isn't. The budding talents of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are undeniable. Have your own recommendations? Adam was bored. In Dunkirk, Nolan manages to foreground the spirit of the Britain by obscuring the actual people. And of course, Nolan does his Nolan thing. Have your own recommendations? Sexy Beast is an anti-heist movie that yada yada's the actual heist.
