Τίτλος πρωτότυπου: Matthew Gregory Lewis "The Monk - A Romance" (1796)Ακολουθώντας την Anne Radcliffe στη δημιουργία μυθιστορημάτων του γοτθικού είδους, ο M. G. Lewis δημοσίευσε το μυθιστόρημα του The Monk, για ένα κοινό που επιθυμούσε να απολαύσει ψυχαγωγία με έντονα στοιχεία τρόμου. Σε αντίθεση με το πιο εκλεπτυσμένο The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) της Radcliffe, ο Lewis δεν προσπάθησε να δώσει καμία λογική εξήγηση για τα χονδροειδή υπερφυσικά στοιχεία που περιέχονται στο μυθιστόρημά του.Μόλις 20 ετών όταν δημοσίευσε το Ambrosio, (ή The Monk), ο Lewis είχε ωστόσο επενδύσει μεγάλη προσπάθεια στη μελέτη της λογοτεχνίας που παρήγαγαν οι σαφώς πιο μελαγχολικοί Γερμανοί. Τίτλος πρωτότυπου: Matthew Gregory Lewis "The Monk - A Romance" (1796)ΔιασκευέςΑν και δεν πρόκειται για άμεση διασκευή, το μυθιστόρημα του E. T. A. Hoffmann "Die Elixiere des Teufels" (Τα ελιξίρια του διαβόλου) του 1815 βασίζεται στη βασική ιδέα του Μοναχού και αντλεί πολλά από τα θέματά του, τη διαφθορά ενός μοναχού άγνωστης καταγωγής, ο οποίος φημίζεται για τα κηρύγματά του, την εμπλοκή του σε μια αιμομικτική σχέση και τον πειρασμό από τον διάβολο.Το έργο "La nonne sanglante", ένα έργο 5 πράξεων των Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois και Julien de Mallian, το οποίο έκανε πρεμιέρα στις 16 Φεβρουαρίου 1835 στο Παρίσι στο Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, ήταν πολύ δημοφιλές στην εποχή του. Τίτλος πρωτότυπου: Matthew Gregory Lewis "The Monk - A Romance" (1796)Το "The Monk: A Romance" είναι ένα γοτθικό μυθιστόρημα του Matthew Gregory Lewis, που δημοσιεύτηκε το 1796 σε τρεις τόμους.

We’ll look at some real-life and fictional evildoers and how they are portrayed in news, movies and literature. Alright, alright, this is probably mostly about rulebooks again. And only part 1? huh!@!?. If you want to read the credits, send an mp3 (or similar audio file) of you reading the following names. TGT 178 On Topic: Getting Rid of Rulebooks
This week we add on to our episode 177/40 discussion (talking about rulebooks) and talk about what it would be to get rid of the rulebook. We take different sides on this one right down to whether we should even consider getting rid of rulebooks at all. And if we did what it should and shouldn't look like. We could have problem gone on for another couple hours, but had to cut it at some point... If you want to read the credits, send an mp3 (or similar audio file) of you reading the following names. TGT 177 On Topic: Rulebooks (ep 40 rerun)
This week we wanted to talk about getting rid of rulebooks. But Kitty is too sick to record, so instead of recording without her, this is a rerun of episode 40 where we talk about what we like and don't like about rulebooks. It's been edited to remove time sensitive content (what we referred to as off topic at the time) but otherwise remains intact and relevant to next week's conversation where we really will talk about getting rid of rulebooks. It's the start of a new year, so where better to start than talking about how complex the games we play really are. And as a result we find out what types of games we really enjoy the most when it comes to complexity. Oh, and we talk a lot about BGG's weight rating for games, turns out it's a surprisingly good indicator for games you may or may not like.

This week we reflect on the readings for this week in year A, which is the eighth and last Sunday in Epiphany: Exodus 24:12-18, 2 Peter 1:16-21, Matthew 17:1-9. Show Notes: All these themes—appearance of the glory, divine condescension, building of a tabernacle—return in the tale of the transfiguration, a set of parallels not lost on the fathers of the church. Indeed, the Greek Fathers were fond of drawing parallels between this epiphany of the incarnate Son and its important forerunner in the Old Testament. What Brevard Childs, in his Exodus, wrote in summary of c...

His work casts a long shadow across the genre, often hailing as the origin of conventions that we now think of as standard –– or at times...
