KFAI\'s MinneCultureKFAI's MinneCultureThe Long, Dark Shadow of Minnesota's Eugenic Sterilization ProgramBetween 1925 and 1945, 2,204 people — 77% of whom were women — were eugenically sterilized in Minnesota. Minnesota's sterilization program targeted "sexually promiscuous" women and impoverished people. The intended goal of the program was to lessen poverty and welfare costs by ending the family lines of people deemed "immoral" or "feebleminded." A woman named Rose DeChaine was sterilized by this program. But her sterilization didn't end or fix any of her family's problems. Instead, Rose's time in the system set off a chain of hurt and dislocation that continues to echo throughout her family into the present day.2025-04-0339 minKFAI\'s MinneCultureKFAI's MinneCultureSeason 9 premieres March 27!Season 9 of MinneCulture drops on March 27. This new majority of people in a new land needed myths and stories to fill in the blanks about why and how they came here. Like the story of Kensington Runestone. A purportedly 'discovered' rune stone that proved that Nordic expires made it to Minnesota in the year 1362. In this episode, reporter Matthew Schneeman dives into the connection between the stone and Minnesota's white population, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of fol...2023-02-0227 minA Year from Now...A Year from Now...AYFN SPECIAL RELEASE: My Left HandA Year from Now will be back in the spring of 2023 (hopefully) in the mean time, here's a special piece I, matthew schneeman lead producer of AYFN, made during a difficult winter last year. The night before Thanksgiving in 2021 I broke my right elbow. A car was running a red light and I braked, on my bike, and flipped over the handle bars. For the month and a half that I had a cast, which put my right hand out of commission, I wrote a song a day to see how different my composition would be if I wrote with...2023-01-171h 05KFAI\'s MinneCultureKFAI's MinneCultureThe Modernization of Meat in MinnesotaHistorians have argued that the history of America can be told through the history of meat. The meat industry was often the first to innovate and make use of modern technologies: from the railroad and refrigerated cars to meat packing plants' dis-assembly lines that inspired Henry Ford’s assembly line. This is especially true for Minnesota. The University of Minnesota was the first university to specialize in meat studies with the opening of the Andrew Boss Meat Lab. South Saint Paul’s stockyards and meat packing plants were once the largest in the world. In the past hundred and fift...2023-01-0524 minNavigating FreedomNavigating Freedom12 - DESERTSNavigating Freedom’s final episode takes you to two different desserts. What it’s like to do forty years in prison while close enough to see the tourists of San Francisco? And what do you do when you get out? The crushing irony of finally getting the freedom you need, but when you get it your mind and body still act as if you’re locked up? There are many people we didn’t interview for this show who went the other way.   Featuring: Chanthan Bun, John John Pisalem, and Andre Gadson Producers: Damon Cooke, Lisa Strong Lead Producer: Matthew Schneeman Horn player from intro on instagram @Gettaent2022-12-0651 minNavigating FreedomNavigating Freedom08 - GARDENINGThis week’s episode is a collection of stories about gardening in, and out, of prison. If that sounds about as entertaining as watching the grass grow, well, not all of us have access to lush grass. Maybe watching grass grow is worth doing every now and then? But, fear not, this episode is about much more than just green thumbs behind bars. It’s about the food people in prison eat and how plants and life can help those who have harmed others and themselves heal.
