This stunningly great 7″ is a mystery of mysteries.
When I happen across unfamiliar records with Tim Yo covers* in the MRR library, they usually turn out to be something good, or at least interesting. But this one is by far my favorite “discovery.” The Tenants played slow- to mid-tempo punk/post-punk that is both dark and melodic (think Wipers, Zounds, or more recently The Estranged). I first heard of the Breeders (not the ex-Pixies band) on some website where their Zen Punk EP was compared to fellow Midwest bands Mecht Mensch and the State. Wow! That’s one way to get my attention quick. The record was one of the first I made a point of checking out the first time I visited the MRR record library. Now, I definitely wouldn’t say it lived up to the “hype” (if you could call it such), but it’s nevertheless a cool li’l 7″ and still pretty obscure.

Hope you picked it up! Though details are sketchy and hard to come by, the Made in South Bay compilation is probably one of the rarest American hardcore records in existence. Supposedly only 100 were made and given away at a show in Los Angeles in the early ’80s late ’90s (??). Given that there’s no label artwork or picture sleeve—just a stamp on one side of the record—I wouldn’t be surprised if at least half of them were tossed in the trash over the years. Fuckin’ Reagan Youth! They ruled. Here we have a rare and mysterious recording of unknown origins! It comes off a dubbed tape from MRR’s archives and as far as I can tell is a different recording than either the first 12″ or the Live & Rare CD on New Red Archives. The sound quality is good and you can faintly hear a recording engineer talking between a couple of the songs, so my guess is that it was done in a studio. Just got done soaking myself in the new Smalltown record. Ever since their first single I have been all about this band — infectious Stiff Little Fingers jams with a touch of mod revival and dare I say early One Man Army. The last LP was a bit polished, and while this one is definately big, the added instrumentation of horns (sparingly…don’t panic!) is a real bonus. Keep your peepers peeled for these Swedes hitting the US shores soon…
