Kolbe as Witness
Michael Pakaluk How can it be that, simply from viewing a picture of someone, you can form a conviction that he is a saint? The conviction appears to be a mere intuition, but later you discover that it is well-grounded. So it was for me and Maximilian Kolbe. Before he was famous, upon seeing his picture in a parish newspaper - the familiar one, where he has his long beard and is in his habit - a heartfelt conviction arose in me that I should follow this man, because he was one of the "holy ones." Some Ethics of Some AI
by Michael Pakaluk There's no such thing as "the ethics of AI," because there are different types of AI, and differing visions of the use of AI. And these uses are constantly developing, while diverse ethical concerns appear at the personal, corporate, and societal levels. In general, "the world" is concerned about control and equality ("How can we regulate it, if we do not even know how it works?" or "Will AI magnify inequalities of wealth and power?") primarily as they relate to big systems such as the economy. Meanwhile, the Church, I take it, is most interested in...

The Meaning of Life
By Michael Pakaluk What is the meaning of life? I shall tell you. That life should have "meaning" is a distinctively modern concern. In the classical world, it was enough if a life were good, successful, and reasonable. We all strive for happiness, it was said: what could "meaning" possibly add? In the classical outlook, however, it was taken for granted that any natural reality, such as human life, inherently has a telos (i.e., an end towards which it tends). Take away that telos and one looks for a meaning distinct from that thing. In a...

Today's "Corban" is Social Security
By Michael Pakaluk. God's plan for a person's support in old age can be stated in five words: children, and the extended family. The Church teaches that this is affirmed by the Fourth Commandment. "Honor your father and your mother" means to obey them when under their care, and to love and honor them always, which includes providing them with the necessities of life when they are old and infirm. "Children must give their parents material and moral support in old age and in times of illness, loneliness, or distress." (CCC 2218) It's just that children repay their...

Two Reflections on the Visitation
Elizabeth's Faith as Shown in the Visitation By Michael Pakaluk Mary travelled "with haste" to visit Elizabeth. The trip of 90 miles can be done in under four days by a fit person walking quickly. Conception takes place in the fallopian tube, and after that, for about six days, the embryo travels down the tube to implant in the uterus. Therefore, the Lord was an embryo in the blastula stage in one of Mary's fallopian tubes, not even implanted, when Mary greeted Elizabeth. Elizabeth, five months earlier, when she had discovered she was pregnant, had placed herself in...

Our Lord's Languages of Love
By Michael Pakaluk. We say that "prayer is conversation with God," but that's not strictly correct. Prayer to God is conversation with God. Prayer to a saint is conversation with a saint. So, rather, prayer is conversation. It gets its name from just one thing we can do in a conversation, which is to ask (Latin, precare). Being an interlocutor in a conversation is hardly an incommunicable trait of divinity. Therefore, Protestants make a gross blunder when they accuse Catholics who pray to Mary of idolatry, simply because they converse with her. There is no reason why...

The Memoirs of St. Peter - Michael Pakaluk
Michael Pakaluk has written a new translation and commentary of Mark's Gospel. Mark was relating very recent events, with details only an eyewitness (most likely Peter) would have mentioned. This earliest Gospel set the standard for what words and deeds of Christ would be included by the other evangelists, and reflected on by Christians until the end of the age. If these are indeed the memoirs of St. Peter "as told to" St. Mark, then, as Pakaluk says, all of the Gospels bear the mark of the Petrine ministry. Links The Memoirs of St. Peter...
