(b) Since the preparations for receiving the Torah began on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, it is understood that there is a connection between Rosh Chodesh and Torah: After the moon becomes smaller and smaller and then disappears completely, Rosh Chodesh marks the birth of the new moon, and from then on the moon shines more and more with each passing day (unlike the sun, which shines constantly without change). Similarly, one’s study of Torah, which is a Torah of Life, requires growth. In a plant’s life, there are times when you can see it growing and producing fruit, and times when it appears frozen and doesn’t grow or produce fruit, but during that time it receives new strength to produce more fruit. Just as there were certain conditions and preparations when the Torah was given the first time, preparations must similarly be made to receive the Torah anew every year – including that “Our children will be our guarantors” that the Jewish people will live with the Torah – which was the only guarantee Hashem accepted. The Torah also tells us that from the millions of Jews in the desert, only one fell into sin, Shlomis bas Divri, and it was the result of her being “very talkative,” meaning a lack of tznius in her speech. The highest expression of the Torah’s preciousness is not just by honoring a Sefer-Torah and keeping it from being disrespected and the like, but by living in such a way that in everything one does, even physical matters and bodily matters, it is evident that it is being done by someone who is connected to Torah. Typically, Chassidim would celebrate by making hachlatos to give the Rebbe nachas. However, major milestone years warranted something unique and memorable. Thus, for the fiftieth anniversary (5739), N’shei U’bnos Chabad commissioned a sefer Torah to be written in honor of the Rebbe and Rebbetzin. In 5741, the Sefer Torah was finally completed.
