提到纽约自然就会提到MoMA,它不仅是一个特指的地名，而且也算是一个“纽约文化”的代名词。那么，什么是MoMA？
众所周知，纽约客一向对艺术尤其是现代艺术怀有特殊的情结。虽然过去了将近一个世纪，许多人认为“现代艺术”或者“现代主义”仍在影响着这座城市。于是有人会问，什么是所谓“现代”？如今的艺术展越来越多元化，从油画到涂鸦，从雕塑到回收品，从摄影到即兴表演，看过之后人们不禁要问：什么是“艺术”，或者还有什么不是“艺术”？作为现代艺术的容器，美术馆也在不断演变。当观众和展品的各自角色逐渐模糊，甚至开始颠倒过来的时候，“美术馆”又该是个什么样子？
由以上几个问题作引子，三个故事围绕MoMA展开，时间跨越过去、现在和不久的将来。一个是发生在艺术家身上的悲欢离合，见证了现代艺术的一段真实历史；一个关于剧作家的故事，演绎出艺术之都里面人和人之间的情感纠葛；一个充满争议的新闻事件，阴差阳错地把建筑师推上了被告席接受整个城市的审判......
