The Catholic Thing
The Decline of Liberal Catholicism
by Msgr. Robert J. Batule. When I was ordained a priest in 1985, my first pastor was about to turn 50 years old; he was a member of the Ordination Class of 1962. He saw himself and others saw him too as a "Vatican II" priest. There were meetings galore, a lot of "co-ministry" with women Religious, and, in discussions, frequent references to the marginalized and minorities of various kinds. But I don't recall that we had a single Holy Hour in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament in my five-year assignment there, nor do I remember hearing a word against co-habitation...

Fr John Paul Kimes and the Cause of Joseph Dutton Pt2
As I wrote last week, I was a member of the Historical Commission for the Cause of Canonization of Servant of God Joseph Dutton who, as you know, worked for 44 years on Molokai with Saints Damien and Marianne caring for the victims of leprosy. When such a commission closes its work, a meeting must be held in the diocese of the cause for canonization with all members present. This is required by the dicastery for the causes of saints to which we our individual reports are sent. Thus, two other members of that commission, Pat Boland of Honolulu and Fr...

Summer Series Top 10 Episodes: Planting Seeds - Msgr. Gregory Ramkissoon
As Gregory Ramkissoon walked to work at the university in Kingston, Jamaica, he encountered a community of squatters living in such poverty he felt sick to his stomach. Shacks made of cardboard and scraps of tin. Babies wailing. Humans living in filth and garbage. It was 1978 and when Gregory faced his urban planning students in a lecture hall that morning, he told them to follow him. As the group streamed out into the street, he asked them how they could help those who were suffering. “Start where you are,” Gregory told me. With this philosophy, he lau...

Planting Seeds - Msgr. Gregory Ramkissoon
This is a conversation that began many years ago, in our Boston College days, when I knew him simply as Gregory. He is, to me, the personification of joy. He is bubbly and playful and whether we were sitting in the Eagles Next cafeteria at BC or chatting over lunch or dancing in the streets of Boston, he always had a knack for making me laugh. We talk about paying attention to the world around you. About the lessons he learned from his mom and dad about how important it is to start right where you are. And although M...
