"비밀 합의는 '노무현 대통령이 '앞으로 NLL을 주장하지 않겠다'고 김정일 전 위원장에게 구두 약속을 해 준 것"이라고 정 의원은 주장했다.
정 의원 발언은 진위 논란과 함께 대선 정국에 큰 파장을 몰고 왔다.
하지만 정 의원이 주장한 남북 정상만의 단독 회담은 없었고, 따라서 비밀 협상 결과를 담은 녹취록도 없는 것으로 확인됐다.
정 의원은 "내가 말한 것은 처음부터 '비밀 협상 녹취록'이 아니라 '정상회담 공식 대화록'이었다"고 둘러댔지만, 옹색함을 감출 수는 없었다.
그런데도 정 의원은 "정치생명을 걸겠다"고 강수를 두고 나섰다.
앞서 '여대생 성희롱 발언' 파문으로 한나라당(현 새누리당)에서 출당된 강용석 전 의원은 박원순 서울시장 아들의 MRI 사진에 정치생명을 걸었다.
자신의 믿음을 확고한 진실로 여긴 탓이었겠지만, 실제 박 시장 아들의 MRI 사진 한 방에 강 전 의원은 그야말로 '훅 가고' 말았다.
NLL에 목을 맨 정문헌 의원의 운명은 어찌될지 귀추가 주목된다.
한편 새누리당은 새누리당대로 해묵은 'NLL 이념 공세'에 여념이 없는 모습이다.
노무현 전 대통령은 재임 중 'NLL은 영토선으로 보기 어렵다'는 등 NLL에 대한 자신의 견해를 공개적으로 드러냈다.
그때마다 새누리당(당시 한나라당)은 "노 대통령이 위험천만한 생각으로 국민을 혼란에 빠뜨리고 있다"며 맹비난을 퍼붓곤 했다.
