Episode 53 — Protect supporting services like DNS and NTP
This episode focuses on supporting services that rarely get attention until they fail, because the ISA exam expects you to recognize that services like DNS and NTP can directly impact security controls, logging credibility, and even segmentation effectiveness. You’ll define why DNS is a security dependency, not just a convenience, by connecting it to name resolution for critical systems, authentication services, logging endpoints, and cloud integrations. We’ll also explain why NTP is essential for audit trails, correlation, and forensic readiness, and how unreliable time sources weaken evidence even when logs are collected. You’ll learn practical protections such a...

This episode explains Network Time Protocol (NTP), which synchronizes clocks across devices to ensure accurate timestamps and coordinated operations. Accurate timekeeping is essential for authentication, logging, and troubleshooting, making NTP an important exam subject. The protocol operates in a hierarchical system of stratum levels, with stratum 0 as the most accurate reference clocks and higher strata providing distribution.Practical considerations are discussed, such as how incorrect time settings can prevent secure logins, invalidate certificates, or disrupt logs. Troubleshooting tips include checking NTP server availability, verifying stratum levels, and diagnosing network delays affecting synchronization. By mastering NTP, you’ll be...

This episode introduces four essential network services: Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Network Time Protocol (NTP), and Syslog. DNS translates hostnames into IP addresses, DHCP automatically assigns addresses to devices, NTP synchronizes clocks across systems, and Syslog provides centralized logging. These services are critical both for exam questions and for the reliable operation of any network. The discussion expands into practical use. DNS failures may cause websites to be unreachable, DHCP outages prevent devices from obtaining IP addresses, NTP misconfigurations lead to authentication problems, and Syslog supports security monitoring by collecting logs in...

NTP vs. SNTP: What’s the Difference?
(And Which One Do You Really Need?) NTP (Network Time Protocol) and SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) are similar TCP/IP protocols in that they use the same time packet from a Time Server message to compute accurate time. The procedure used by the Time Server to assemble and send out a time stamp is exactly the same whether NTP (i.e., full implementation NTP) is used, or SNTP is used.

The network time protocol (NTP) synchronizes the time of a computer client or server to another server or within a few milliseconds of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). NTP servers, long considered a foundational service of the Internet, have more recently been used to amplify large-scale Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. While 2016 did not see a noticeable uptick in the frequency of DDoS attacks, the last 12 months have witnessed some of the largest DDoS attacks, according to Akamai's State of the Internet/Security report. One issue that attackers have exploited is abusable NTP servers. In 2014, there were over seven million...

NTP does the job of keeping the clocks right on tens of millions of computers and other networked devices. Harlan has been working with Unix since the late 70s, and with open source starting probably in the early 80s. He put a lot of effort in to making sure the software he wrote and used was portable... At that time, to install NTP you got a tarball from UDel, unpacked it, read a bunch of instructions, edited the Makefile and a Config file, then built and installed the software...By the summer of 1996 the state of autoconf's...
