Justice in doubt: The killing of Brian Hilton
In 2016, 77-year-old pensioner Brian Hilton was found on the floor of his Ōpōtiki home — brutally beaten, barely conscious, and covered in blood. He died five days later. Police launched a major homicide investigation, first zeroing in on one local man before turning their attention to another: Harry Matchitt. A beer bottle found in Hilton’s lounge carried Matchitt’s DNA, and after a series of police interviews, the lifelong Mongrel Mob member made a hazy admission — saying he was “pissed” and may have “pushed and kicked” the elderly man. In 2021, a jury found him guilty of manslaughter....

Andrew Alderson: NZME sports broadcaster on the ongoing test series between the Black Caps and West Indies
The Black Caps are in control after the first day's play in the second test match against the West Indies. After the visitors set a strong platform racing out to 66-0 the Black Caps took control led by a strong spell from Blair Tickner taking 4-32. Unfortunately he went off after suffering a shoulder injury, which could rule him out of the test. NZME sports broadcaster Andrew Alderson recapped the action. Andrew Alderson: NZME sports broadcaster on Blair Tickner injuring his shoulder in the West Indies test
Black Caps fast bowler Blair Tickner has been taken to hospital and is unlikely to take any more part in the second cricket test against the West Indies. Tickner had taken four wickets when he fell awkwardly diving to save a boundary at the Basin Reserve, with a dislocated shoulder the unwelcome outcome. NZME sports broadcaster Andrew Alderson says Tickner hit the ground hard - adding to the Black Caps' growing list of injuries. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Diary of a Killer (part two): Murder, prison and the 'gangster granny'
(Contains strong language and references to violence and sexual assault.) In 1991, Bronwyn Warwick crossed a line that would define her forever. The transgender former sex worker murdered a Ponsonby pensioner during a botched antiques robbery. But the story didn’t end with her arrest. Decades later, Warwick’s life took even darker and more tragic turns: years behind bars, living as a woman in mens prisons, release and relapse, and finally, a debilitating diagnosis. In this gripping conclusion to A Moment in Crime: Diary of A Killer senior crime and justice journalist Anna Leask unpacks the mur...

Shayne Currie: NZME Editor-at-Large on trust in media, BBC faces allegations of bias
The BBC is facing accusations of bias, as well as a lawsuit, after a leaked memo suggests the Panorama programme edited one of Donald Trump’s speeches to imply he encouraged the Capitol Hill riots of January 2021. The US President is demanding a full retraction and is threatening to sue for nearly 1.8 billion New Zealand dollars in damages. The incident is doing nothing to raise trust in the media, or dispel concerns of media bias. NZME Editor-at-Large Shayne Currie told Kerre Woodham that a reporter’s job when covering the news is to report...
