Strength & Solidarity
54. Human Rights: The Symposium is ending – what did we learn?
What are the big takeaways from five years of conversation between 200 human rights leaders from nearly 70 countries? How did activism and solidarity get sidelined as vehicle for human rights work, in favour of the multilateral review bodies and government advocacy? Why do many younger leaders avoid creating organisations? And what do activists from the US civil rights movement or South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement have to teach today’s activists? These and other questions get an airing as the moderators of The Symposium on Strength and Solidarity for Human Rights, look back over the project and reflect on its final meeting.

Radicale Rechtvaardigheid - Nani Jansen Reventlow x Paola Verhaert

19. Social movement or NGO? Can it be both?
Most would agree that social justice and human rights movements should be led by those who need the change they’re fighting for. But what’s the best way to achieve that? In this episode, we hear about a South African organizational model that centers community ownership by electing leaders and board. But if a movement has to double as a professional NGO, meeting legal, bureaucratic and donor obligations, things can get complicated. Axolile Notywala has led two organizations doing rights and justice work in Cape Town and shares some insight. And in the Coda, human rights lawyer Nani Jans...

Who decides? Free speech in the age of social media
After rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021, several social media companies took an unprecedented action — banning then-president Donald Trump from their platforms. This decision has spurred much conversation on whether and when limitations to online speech are justified. Increasingly, social media giants have come under fire for not doing enough to address issues including mis- and disinformation, hate speech and incitement to violence on their platforms. But who should draw the red lines around online speech? What content should they exactly moderate? And what is the balance between protecting free speech and upholding the public interest?
