The church is best known as the place where playwright Christopher Marlowe was baptised. It is not clear when the first church on this High Street site was built; it is possible that there was a Saxon church here, possibly as early as the 7th century. However, the earliest evidence we have only pushes the date back to the 11th century. However, recent archaeological excavations have discovered a late Iron Age or early Roman ditch beneath the church.2020-04-1301 minNathalie Language ExperienceNathalie Language Experience13. Some claim that it inspired a passage in Dickens’s David Copperfield. Others say it was the house of MP and recorder of Canterbury Sir John Boys; this has been discovered to be unfounded. Nonetheless, the house often takes his name.2020-04-1301 minNathalie Language ExperienceNathalie Language Experience11. Going back to at least the beginning of the 20th century the building contained seven tenements: hence the pub’s postal address of 3-9 Church Lane. In 1937 it was in danger of demolition as unfit for human habitation, but discovery of ma...2020-04-1301 minNathalie Language ExperienceNathalie Language Experience10.
