לעומת זאת, כאשר בדקו במחקרים רבים את השפעת ההורות על מדד האושר, ראו כי רמת האושר של ההורים יורדת עם הולדת הבן הראשון, ממשיכה לרדת כאשר שיא הירידה הוא שהילדים בגיל ההתבגרות. רמת האושר של ההורים חוזרת חזרה לרמה הקודמת שלה כשהילדים עוזבים את הבית.
כשבודקים מהם הסיבות, מבחינים כי ילדים מביאים איתם הרבה חרדות ודאגות. הורים רבים מוצאים עצמם טרודים רוב היום בדאגות ומחשבות. הדאגות מתחילות בדאגות יום יומיות ומסתיימת בדאגות לבריאות, ולעתיד של הילדים. מחקרים גם מראים כי בעשור האחרון רמת החרדות והדאגות של ההורים עולה יותר מהעבר.
