Свой первый сольник Хэккет выпустил за два года до ухода из Genesis, в 1975 году. До сих пор многие считают Voyage of the acolyte лучшей работой гитариста. Поскольку параллельно шла работа над альбомом собственно Genesis, то и на сольнике Стива отметилась часть коллектива основной тогда группы: ударник и певец Фил Коллинз, а также басист Майк Рузерфорд. Кроме того, в подготовке пластинки приняли участие: брат Стива , флейтист Джон Хэккет, клавишник Джон Экокк (John Acock), скрипач Найджел Уоррен-Грин (Nigel Warren-Green, ех-Manfred Manns Earthband) и вокалистка Салли Олдфилд (Sally Oldfield).
