Крис рос в большой семье иммигрантов, его отец был итальянцем, а мать – ирландкой с югославскими корнями. У его родителей было еще шестеро детей. Семья владела небольшим кафе, в котором продавалось мороженное.Окончив школу, Крис поступил в журналистский колледж, но так и не закончил его из-за конфликта с преподавателем. После этой неудачи он занялся семейным бизнесом. Но в начале 70-х Крис услышал песню американского фольк-гитариста Джо Уолша из группы «The Eagles» и он понял, что хочет заниматься музыкой. Накопив нужную сумму, 19-летний парень приобретает высококлассную гитару. Почти два года Крис не выпускал ее из рук, ведь он твердо решил самостоятельно научиться основной игре.В 1973 году местная рок-группа «MAGDALENE» искала гитариста и Крис Риа подошел на эту роль.
